If any of you were watching I bought the Metro 6/1 that was sold on Ebay last week. From what I gather it is somewhat odd in that it is a direct injection engine? Prior owner had it down for inpection/sand removal and gessed it has a couple hours runtime. Runs sooo sweet with none of the vibration, gear noise or other Listeroid issues I read about. Plans for it are 3-4 KW back up power at the house and prime power at the farm when we need it which isnt often and you guys may not believe it :o man toy. One of the things I worked on at a young age on the farm was governors and I see why you guys complain about them, it is very lazy. I am going to start working on that as soon as I have a Gen head and a way to load it. Hopefully I can help the thing, and you others out with the lazy governor syndrome.  I would like to start acquiring some spare parts, enough for one overhaul. Is there anyway to tell I f I own a wet sleeve or dry sleeve engine outside of pulling the head?

Looks like you got a sweet engine! Good on you.  These guys sell the Metro brand, and can help.

Have you been able to learn any more about this DI Metro?  Anyone know if (other than the stepped head without the traditional CS combustion chamber) the parts interchangeable with other 6/1 engines?

From what I've read the DI listeroids are usually equipped with aluminum pistons and different counterweights.  However, Metro claims their engines are DI but have a standard cast iron piston.  (http://www.metroexporters.com/pages/metex/dieselslow.html) and the flywheel counterweights look "standard" to me.

Here's why I'd like to know.

I acquired one of these from Sam for a price I couldn't resist a few years ago, but I've never started it.  At that time I planned to use it as a backup generator.  I tried several times to get an ST head, tappet jack, pulley, and CD from George but had repeated communication problems.  I set the project aside when a family member got a whole house generator and gave me their portable gas generator.  I've finally gotten around to getting the now outsourced Utterpower CD and an 8.4" pulley.  I plan to order a ST5 head next week.

With the Listeroid vendors dropping like flies as a result of the new EPA rules I'm considering stocking up on spare parts while they are available in the US.  Most likely the CME complete parts kit that costs as much as I paid for the engine itself ... if the parts fit.

His flywheels have the counterbalance cast into them. Most (not always I suppose) internialy counterbalanced engines do it with weight bolted to the crank not the flywheels. All of that still doesn't mean it has to have a cast iron piston I suppose....It would tend to be a smooth runner with alunminum for sure.

Hello Irak, I haven't  even removed a cover from it to look as my 1115 generator project has priority at the moment. I had wonderd about the internals myself and plan to take a look inside, maybe Ill get that done tomorrow. I am pretty green with these engines so I dont relate to  "smooth" as it pertains to a Listeroid. It will run at rated speed on the cart shown and not walk around on the floor but shakes some, is that smooth for one of them???? I have a 5KT ST coming for the Metro also and ity will see some duty during outages.

Other than the head being Direct Injection, the internals should be the same as any other METRO.

I pulled the crankcase cover off today and took a peek inside. Aluminum piston, no counterweights on the crank, wet sleeve, cast iron idler gear, roller bearing mains dont know what else to look for? Are you guys saying that If I wanted a parts kit to have around that any of the kits will work?

Looks like the only semi-unique thing about your engine is the Alum. piston and direct injection head.
Central Maine Diesel sells pretty well everything you need. They might even have an aluminum piston.
Bottom end should be the same as any other 6/1 that has roller bearings.
Rings, sleeve etc. should be the same.
Nice looking engine.

I second that!!

I have the 12/2 twin with the same heads some call the ODball, its direct Injected as well, anyways it runs good, smooth, for a twin.

everything  far as the spar parts will fit this engine,, only thing is when or if you get the rebuild kit from  CMD youll get the CS head and piston... no big deal... put it all in fire it up. it wont be DI anymore,,, but youll have good spares.
