That was a good find and fun to read, Bob.  Yikes, those core materials sure were crude!

A good reference text book for transformers and filter chokes-  more modern, using found and surplus I-E and toroid cores and rewinding them:

"Practical Transformer Design Handbook" Second Edition,  Eric Lowdon, 1989

however, you gotta admit having this ancient text resource might be useful in a TSHTF situation.

you never know when you are in a position to have to build one, and have nothing but crude stuff to work with.

what amazed me was the relatively high efficiencies they were able to achieve with some of those units.

Thanks for the textbook tip, Bob, I found it at Powells for $30. and just bought it.

I was also surprised at the decent performance of the laminated ring cores.  Seems silicon steel lamination cores are nice, but not really critical.
