hello

i have a 8-1 listeroid iam in the process of rebuilding. soon i will be ready to start putting things back together. i have been doing some research and came across some upgrade parts that iam having a tough time locating. was wondering if anyone could help me find them:

       - plain big end bearing
       - 2" hollow dipper rod
       - offset idler bolt

from my research it seems like these upgrades would really help in improving the engines performance
as well as its longevity and reducing maintenance. i dont understand why they are so hard to find. any help would be greatly appreciated

These were originally mde by XYZER who has stopped production. I have them in both my listeroids and they work well. I believe I saw a thread on the forum where another member was granted "permission", so to speak, to make them. I suggest doing a forum search for "offset" idler bolt by date. I think I saw this thread about a year ago.

I don't know if he is a member of this forum or not but John Ferguson had some. John@woodnstuff.ca

I have some plain bearings in stock but no offset idlers nor hollow dippers. A hollow dipper can be made by drilling out a standard dipper, don't know where an offset idler bolt can be found.

Check with dieselgman (Gary, http://www.microcogen.info/index.php?action=profile;u=891) who posts here -- he may be able to get them. The 8/1 'riod I got from him had a hollow dipper (though it was just a tube and not nearly as nice as the xyzer piece).

Let me look around, I think I may have a dipper setting around. Is I'll give it to ya. I can look tomorrow.

thanks so much for all you help guys. i really appreciate it. i called john on the plain bearing, still waiting to hear back from him. i got my 8-1 from gary at des but didnt come with the hollow dipper. if you have one i would be happy to buy it from you. let me know when you have a chance if you have one.

thanks again

I have a friend who is a brilliant machinist, and he can make these bolts. Here is his company:

I did talk to XYZer a while back. I think he said he needs an order for at least 20 to make it worth the while.

I need a drawing for Denny to work from... I don't have a bolt removed from the engine yet. I can make a drawing once I have a bolt pulled out.

Another approach is to turn down the idler bolt diameter and add an offset bushing.  Several bushings, each with different amount of offsets can be easily made on a lathe or mill.

See:  http://www.microcogen.info/index.php?topic=936.msg26850#msg26850

The idler in the upper left of the photo is a stock piece.  The one in the center has been turned down to accept the bushings.  That's the approach I used to reset my engine's offset.  No more gear clatter as the engine turns over.  Much quieter running.  The poorly meshed idler gear makes a surprising amount of the total mechanical noise produced by these engines.

unfortunately i dont own a lathe, so machining the part myself isnt an option. i saw someone else on the forum was also looking for an offset idler bolt as well. depending on the price i would take two. i wonder if there are enough people we could get together to meet the minimum to get xyzer to make a batch. i will be using my listeroid in an off grid situation and would like to reassemble it with any improvements that will increase performance, reliability, and longevity (plain big end bearing with hollow dipper, offset idler bolt with bronze idler gear, taper roller bearings) i currently have a bronze idler gear and taper roller bearings. the engine has been completely torn down. there was a substantial amount of sand inside the crankcase. most of it was actually under what looked like bulges in the casting, but when i broke through the casting there was actually sand underneath the thin layer of metal. the crankcase interior is now totally clean and i will be giving it a good coat of glyptal. took the governor weights off the cam and weighed them. one was 298.7g and the other 284.8g! thats almost a 14g difference. i dont know but that cant be good. i ground them down to exact match now 282.5g.and polished all the cam lobes and reassembled. fly wheels and crankcase are currently primed and will be painted after glyptal on the interior. by then i hope to have all the improved parts to begin rebuilding the engine. i tried to post pictures but the files are too big. i will have to figure out how to make them smaller and will post them later.

I'm still looking for 4 idler bolts or sleeves, whichever we can find. Maybe we can find a few
other people to get to the required twenty.

For resizing pictures, I like Irfanview.
It's free and very easy to use.

3 different places you can get it from. All give it high ratings.

I'm in for 2 offset bolts   (What's the price ?)

And I also agree about Irfanview. Easiest and best photo tool, and it's compact ( entire download is less than 10Mb )

I went out and looked through my parts. Sorry don't have a dipper for you. Best of luck on your engine.
I'll keep watch for them too, I would like to have spares around.

thanks. i will give the irfanview a try. is there anyone who can ask xyzer what the cost would be if we meet the required amount. he is the same guy who makes the hollow dippers as well. dont know what his minimum is on those but also would be good to know. i would be happy to buy two of each (one for use and another for backup). if there were ten of us willing to do that were there. it would be really cool if we could make this happen. i will be finished soon with all my painting, and dont want to reassemble this thing without these parts. was also wondering if there is anyone else on the forum who is located in my area (miami) would love to be able to have access to someone locally who knows about these engines. please let me know.

OK. Add my name to the list for the hollow dippers----4 of them.
I guess we have made the original poster (strat161) the "keeper of the list"?????
