How about we all agree on a couple of things.

1. None of us actually has direct information about the jackasses that just don't get democracy or a democratic republic.  So please stop generalizing about who they are or who they represent.  If you've ever been in direct contact of a news story and then seen, heard or read it you quickly understand that they are selling stories and not reporting evidence.  The demonstrators get no support from me either or anyone I know.

Sorry, Casey but I am afraid that these are the children of our generation.
Taken by and indoctrinated then 17 or 18 year old aby the Public School System, with but little or no oversight on our part. Hell I was raised up to be proud of this country by the Education System, I never noticed that it all fell apart afterward. Just when and what did happen I dunno, it completely slipped up on me.
It hit me really hard one day when I discovered just how badly I had shirked my responsibility.
I have a beautiful 28yo Daughter, she is a smart, talented, hard working rural mail carrier. Her husband is equally talented and hard working, he manages  local Commercial Sales department for a national
auto parts chain.
At any rate we were going camping 10 or 12 years ago and the gate was closed at the appointed time with a combination lock with the combination set to the date of Paul Revere's ride.
I replied to the attendant, "OK 1775".  She looked puzzled and asked how I knew which was my turn to look puzzled and sat simply " I went to school". My then 17 or 18 year old Daughter asked
"Dad, who was Paul Revere?" I was past shocked. "Just what are they teaching you in school anyway young lady?" She dictated Sports, Cheerleading, tolerance and a whole lot of nothing.
And that is what precipitated her Daddy Taught Crash Course In Life.
Sorry for the long rant, I promise I'll shut up. for a while.....

well i figure we have two possible routes to take

1. we could all go to DC , with torches and pitchforks and demand Trump disband the EPA, or
2. we could do the letter, and btw i intended to include as many signatures as were volunteered.

now i am too old and got too many irons in the fire for option 1 to be much of a choice, and i for one don't
think Donald is very receptive to that sort of thing... at least i know i would not be near as patient with
protesters with broad sweeping demands, so

that leaves us with option 2,  which even though it would be a huge long shot, maybe as was stated it was timed
as well as possible, maybe?  just maybe if he is in the mood to take some of the teeth out of the EPA our little concern
might be easy enough to stick in there somewhere.

anyway, i figure we have a couple months to kick around the idea(s) and watch to see how things are going in DC
because it ain't gonna do no good to send a letter that is too soon and lost in the wash, or during a time when the is
trying to push through other more important stuff.

having said that, i will start on a letter and post it here, for review and that way everyone can have a hand in it. meantime
should anyone hear that the whitehouse or congress is thinking about anything relating to EPA and its over reach, maybe that would be a good time to get a letter out? or so it seems to me.

so keep your ears open and let us know if you hear anything afoot.

Oh hell no I don't want the pollution that the Chinese People are dealing with!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love my crystal clear water and fresh air.  I would prefer the river not catch fire.

BUT common sense must prevail at some point.  Look, I have a really great expensive powerful backpack blower made by Stihl. It's a couple years old and needs the carb "tweaked"
just to bring the high end back on line. Well this thing has a "funny" adjustment screw and I don't have anything that will fit it, so I called the dealer to buy a tool and was told that they could go to jail for selling me one.

Really?  Go to jail for a carb adjustment tool? I think that should go into the category of overreach. It's just silly.  What did I do? Ebay  The Chinese ain't afraid of the big bad EPA. Got 4 different ones for 12 bucks free shipping.

When the EPA themselves  totally F@*$ed that river out west up, and I mean really screwed the pooch, did anyone even lose a job? But if a guy like you or me committed that crime against nature Off with his head.
I'm about wore plum out by all the stupidity.  Let me have my diesel generator, I may even manage to burn 10 or 12 gallons of diesel a year if we get a big enough Ice Storm.  I probably fart more carbon than that in a years time.

 Hello;
I am a new member here and not much of a computer guy. As usual, I arrived at the slow speed diesel craze in 2008 which appeared about the time others were tiring of it and moving on.  My first acquisition was a 6/1 Listeroid from Joel at PS in Portland, Oregon.  We live quite rurally and it has served us well since then coupled with a 5 kw st. generator head.  More recently, I acquired (2) new Changfa brand 195's still in the crate.  I assume that these were manufactured sometime around or shortly after 2000.  I always forage through the lister forums and Changfa when I can find them.  In doing so I always encounter Mobil Bob and The Diesel G man's posts.  I have finally got one of my Changfa's up and ready with a 10kw head direct coupled to it.  I'm ready to put it in the gen shed and rest the Listeroid, or set it up for my shop.  I realized that the only parts I have access to were those that came in the tool kit.  I got the last two hopper blockoff plates that George B. had a year and a half ago.  It seems to me that one of the above mentioned people may carry Changfa parts.  I need to stock some parts since I plan on running these till I fall over.
In looking constantly on line I don't find any parts available in the USA.  It seems to me that interest has waned considerably.  Hopefully the folks at micrcogen can give me some direction.    Thank You very much.   Stevem

Let's see, Changfa parts....... GeorgeB has a link on Utterpower.com  IIRC to a fellow out on the West Coast but I have looked and so help me I can't find the link!  I'm sure some of the more computer savvy fellows here will find it and post it for you.
This fellow is in WA. We have corresponded BUT I HAVE NOT PURCHASED ANYTHING FROM HIM. I'm not saying he's not a great guy but I can't give a review.
I have an engine or two that need parts, but due to personal matters they have been on the back burner for a couple of years....so that's how long it's been since we corresponded.
It could just be a cold trail by now.

You should probably open a new thread in general discussion about this, I am famous for my hijacking.

Hey Bob,
It is being reported that Trump has asked Oklahoma's Scott Pruitt to be the dude in charge of the EPA.
Google Pruitt's lawsuit against the EPA for overregulation.

i am cautiously optimistic that the new epa guy might be a good thing,  in my opinion it can't get much worse
for what it is we do.

SteveM:

i notice there is a guy in gig harbor wa. selling rebuilt kits for the s195 changfa, looks like a fairly complete kit
for something around 250 bucks or so.  in my opinion not a bad price for all that is included.  he is selling on ebay.

ok, i am going to see if i can get an appt with the new epa director,  while he is still in oklahoma.

here is my pitch and i think maybe it is valid.

with all the bruhahahaha over the last election, and all the more stuff about the electoral college and the fact
that if the electoral college was done away with... us in the flyover parts of the country would be basically told how to live
by those that live in predominately large metro areas on the coasts.

so...

microcogeneration and those that are and have been actively working on this sort of thing are for the most part DIY folks
that live well away from urban area's.

the millenials have a penchant for tiny houses, and getting away from the city.

often times folks that want to get out into the sticks are long on ambition and short on cash.  this means that land that is affordable often means it will have either no power available at any cost or at a very high cost.

my thinking is this,  with microcogen you one can generate power relatively competitive with utility rates,  most especially considering the implimentation with tiny house construction and used with solar/wind/whatever.

so here is the opportunity for the flyover country to gain population over time!  more population means more political control for the conservative side of the coin.  (sorry you all on the left, i am not picking on you, it is just a practical argument).

what we need to get across to the new EPA guy is this, we need the exemption of the sub 15hp diesel engines! so that we can continue to work on development and get the whole thing up and going again.

no one can argue that the sub 15hp diesel engine's that would be imported for use by individuals for development of cogen units are going to have any measurable impact on the environment.

the exemption would be for perhaps no more than 2 engines per end user, and there would be no inclusion of corporations to import engine's to use for anything other than cogeneration use (if the corporations are to be included at all.)

in no case could engine's be imported to build up simple electrical generators to be sold to the public, the engines would only be allowed in for use in cogen applications, where the permitted use would only allow the engine's to be run if the waste heats are recovered and put to use where the units are installed.

alternatively units that could demonstrate an efficiency of over 70% in operation would be in compliance, this would clearly illustrate that the engine not only is generating electrical power,  or harvesting of crankshaft power, but the waste heats are being recovered and used.

in any event the number of engine's per year would likely be less than a thousand in this application.

its just that the EPA was so over reaching with their reg's over the last decade or so, and applying the same rules to cogeneration is just ridiculous.

forgive all my spelling errors,  i am typing this on a netbook and i have to go find my glasses.  :)

what do you guys think?  is it worth the effort?

i can't see how it would hurt?

bob g,
Be more than glad to join you if you get the meeting arranged.
Just to show there are more than one of us.
You would do all the talking of course. Your the one with all the knowledge.
Good luck.

C.  A modicum of common sense as refers to our hobby?

I still can't figure how a 2 stroke weedeater or leaf blower is cleaner than a small diesel running at reasonable load. ???

I believe the two stroke engine is dated in this country.  They are wonderful in many ways but that 2.5 ounces of oil in every gallon just doesn't cut it anymore.  We have many stories around here about cowboys running their 4 strokes up side down - for a while.

I'm still curious how they get the small diesel generators like the ones in Costco pass the EPA.  Would someone explain this to me using small words and short sentences?

Starting a slow speed diesel engine manufacturing concern would seem like the smart direction if there isn't a hobby exemption or variance.  Made in the USA Lister-Studs.

I think anything under 49cc does not have to comply.
Weed eaters, chain saw, lawn mowers, and many mopeds are 49cc or less.

In Kalifornia, they have to be CARB rated (Cal Air Repression Bureaucrats) and have non-adjustable mixture and idle controls.  Just great for a $800 chainsaw that is only warranty tested for 200 (or is it 100hrs) hours of CARB compliant operation  After that you toss it, because it's non repairable.
