i am looking for a source for ide hard drive connectors, i believe they are 40 pin type

You mention PINS, meaning the connector would be the DRIVE side, the cables generally are sockets.

40 pin is usually the 5" desktop drive, not the tiny laptop drive, right ?

SAMTECH connectors makes them, and digikey is a vendor.  You can usually call SAMTECH and get a sample in a couple days.

I thought the search would be easy.  That was harder than I thought...

What you want to look for is Shrouded Right Angle headers.  .100" x .100" or 2.54mm x 2.54mm pitch.

Hopefully this is what you're looking for.
