This is my guess, I think there  could of been somthing wrong with the turbo charger seals or the oil return line and the oil was getting pressure fed into the intake manifold.

Can that happen to a 6/1 or an SR2?

I'm having second thoughts about routing my crankcase vent into the air intake.
If ever I broke a piston ring (or two) resulting in significant blow-by, is it conceivable that large amount of oil vapor could be expelled from the vent and into my intake port ?    YIKES !!

I had an 81' diesel VW Rabbit that ran away on me.  It felt like a V8 was under the hood.  That was the only time I buried the speedo.  The rings were worn and the blowby pushed oil up the breather tube which attached to the intake plenum.  Well, the rest was history.  I was able to use the brakes to get it stopped but it had blown the head gasket.  After that I just had the breather dump overboard.

Yes, any diesel that has enough ring wear,  or other concern that introduces lubricating oil into the cylinders can run away. Detroit 2 strokes  were famous for it and have to have an air shutoff,  by law in any marine or road application.  It usually only happens to engines that are hopelessly worn out, and 'ether addicted', which is another way of saying that the rings are shot.

Basically--   if it starts easily it probably has little chance of having this problem, but the older and crankier it gets the risk increases.

Unless you have a major turbo bearing failure and then you are probably stuffed, lol

Somebody here has a CO2 emergency shutdown on their generator, probably automatically activated, for such things...can't remember who. Seems like it would be wise to at least keep a CO2 fire extinguisher on hand when "playing" with your engine.

The the video the red plunger thingy mounted next to the radiator is an emergency air shutoff puller. Shutting off the air is how the safety system stops the old Detroit.

With the listeroids and many other engines you can use a ball valve. Just size the ball opening to the size of the intake opening. Very quick, effective and cheap. I might put one on my Kubota generator project.

Princess has large ball valves with bronze bodies on sale right now.  I think the 1-1/2" is $20.

Seems like a predictable outcome once the process starts. (Unless one can remove the air supply).
BTW.....I bought a 1-1/2" ball valve for the inlet of my 6/1 engine.
