Chevy oil pump for WMO?

I'm looking for a cheap pump that will move thick waste oil. I came across this thing on ebay:

That is, quite obviously, a $20 small block chevy oil pump with an electric motor and an ungodly price tag.
(for comparison http://www.jegs.com/images/photos/500/555/555-23503.jpg)

I think I could make one quite easy, but the problem I see is that the oil pump shaft is designed to leak oil to keep itself lubricated. How have they managed to seal around the pump shaft so it doesn't leak?

Here's a good break down view of an SBC oil pump:

I've been thinking along the same line. My plan is to circulate hot oil in a drum through a centrifuge. To do that I am thinking placing the pump in the bottom of the barrel on a 3 leg stand and then to run the shaft up from the pump to just above the rim of the barrel. The drive motor would hang outside the barrel and use a v belt to drive the shaft.

The pumped oil would flow up through a 1 1/4" pipe to a tee with an element from a hot water heater in the top with the hot oil flowing out the side to the centrifuge. The oil would never leave the drum and no holes would be made in the drum so the possibility of a leak would be minimized. A 3 way ball valve on the outlet to the centrifuge could also be used to pump the clean oil out of the drum. I figure this would work for 25 gal batches of oil.

I was just looking at that last night actually. ;D I want something that will work a little hotter than that.

SBC oil pumps work great and are cheap. They don't leak too much from the shaft or at all from the no gasket housing seal. Chuck it up in a drill or get a motor and a lovejoy and Bob's your uncle. I drilled and tapped my ports for ½" npt and it cranks out what ever I put through it. The thicker the fluid is the more power you need.

Thanks, Geno

To work for centrifuge applications it will need the by-pass spring stiffened or shimmed as stock is 60 psi. How much power are you using Gino? And any estimate of the gpm?

This is what you really want.
If you can convince him to ship it, it is a BARGAIN!!!

That is the style of gear pump I run (carbonator mount) and has worked flawlessly for 3 years and several thousand gallons.

What else can I run on WVO?
...Oh, and an old R-170

I plugged the bypass, it was usually open during operation. Flow is highly variable depending on viscosity. I use a good Rigid drill and can pump 50 gallons of WVO in 15 minutes in the summer. Less when it's cold. I don't remember what rpm it runs at.

Thanks, Geno

Fantastic! Is a little grease really going to keep the shaft from leaking? ??? I wonder if I could use some kind of O-ring or something kinda like a crankshaft seal?

That guy selling those things on ebay is making a KILLING selling painted SBC oil pumps. Look at his feedback - $280 to $700+ for a $20 pump with a motor and a handle. ::)

I'm thinking about boring and tapping for a packing nut around the shaft. Just stuff a little PTFE packing in there and it ought to be OK.

Those motors are not cheap!

You can use a wast oil heater to get the oil up to 300deg.or more or less
you can use the oil that you no longer want or the wast put it in the heater, run a coil of copper tube or a small tank inside the heater  pump the oil to be cleaned in to you drum,Now hot run it thru your centrafuge or Sock
Once oil is hot
take the heater back to your spot in the shop sit down and get back on line looking on the forum for more good info!
Trying to post a photo  :-[ its a pain!
free heat free power free wast oil

Jeff  I think if you click on the photo ,it will take you to my video of my set up.Move the heater in the fireplace when your done
