A friend of mine just built a Changfa generator using an R185 engine and a Voltmaster AB50 head.
Runs really nice.
The engine was set to run at 2000 rpm (makes 6hp at that speed) and the gen set puts out 3kw without any black smoke.
(Shown without the belt guard which was installed later)

hey, that's what I eventually want to do to my R180 when I get some time to work on that stuff.

Two nights ago I had an hour free so I finally made the 6mm shims/spacers I needed to mount the pulley on the flywheel on the R170 (?) that I mounted on my mid-70's Roper tractor. Well the belt aligned on the pulley, the motor fired up, and off I went, whee!

I know the pic is junk, but that's how it looks like on the flywheel side of the R170. No muffler, just a flex-pipe shooting the exhaust out the side.
handfull of horizontal water-cooled Changfa-style motors, in tractor, generators, etc.

Awesome!!! The pic is FINE!  Another great use for one of our great single cylinder diesels.
