They're old-fashioned raw-water cooled marine diesels.  If you type in Sabb diesel (not Saab) in You-Tube, you'll find a number of vids showing them running.  Saab's the "well-built Swede."  Sabb, on the other hand, is the "well-built Norwegian."  Never been able to tell the Norwegians from the Swedes, except the Norwegians seem to smile more.  And the Danes are downright jolly in comparison to either.

The engines aren't elegant.  Simple workboat engines and quite heavy.  Parts are hard to come by and very expensive.  The 8 and 10 HP versions were used in pretty good numbers up until the 1980s in some production sailboats built on the East coast.  They're not in much demand other than as parts for someone who has one.  I'm sure you could find more information on Smokstak.com forum.

Some of the really old ones might have been.  One of the quaint things about the more recent ones was their use of a "punk" to light them off in cold weather.  You'd light the punk, then insert it in a fitting in the head and crank the engine over.  The glowing punk served as a glow plug and helped start the engine.  I'm sure they eventually replaced them with glow plugs, but that was a feature they used for many years.

Some did, but most hot bulb engine comes with special torch that you have to lit up and heat the "bulb" for several minutes prior to start and most of them were air start as well due to massive-ness.  Small ones might be manual cranked.
