NO !
  It will burn up or blow it's fuse.    A current source like a PV, when the C40 enables a charge pulse, pulls the PV to the battery voltage.   If you have a generator there, you will be directly connecting the genset "DC" to the battery.  The C40 will not like that.  PWM chargers will fry used this way.

You need to use a MPPT style of controller to do that. MX60 or 80, Tristar MPPT 45 or 60

I have the XW6048, and it's internal 240VAC charger can be programmed to any limit less than 100A, and it's got a nice power factor of .9    I'll be running about 2.5KW into the XW, and let that feed the battery bank about 40 A

Of course, I have to get the anchor bolts drilled and epoxied when the weather warms up, I think the slab is too cold now to have the epoxy set properly.

I'll be pulling wires next week from the generator shed to the battery shed.
