here is another option,

keep an eye out of an older miller AEAD le 225/200 AC/DC gas drive welder,
they came with onan twins, ran at 1800rpm for 7kwatt 60hz 120/240vac
or would provide 120dc at 3000rpm which was welding speed, and would produce 225amps AC, or 200amps DC
at 100% duty cycle.

Heck Bob, if I see one of these I'll buy it for MYSELF!

I know it's a little off subject, but I bought myself a TIG welder for Christmas (I've been a good boy this year).  I'm having a blast with this thing!  Was able to go from "wonder what this does" to "hey, I don't entirely suck" in a weekend.  I'm not a welding guru by any stretch of the imagination, but could "farmer stick weld" and gas weld reasonably well prior to getting the TIG.  So far, I've found it to be a pretty amazing technology.   Much cleaner, neater, and more precise than other welding types too.  Going to try my hand at some really thin aluminum next.

Jens, I'm not even bright enough to know how to cheat when it comes to TIG.  I just watched everything that Lincoln had posted to youtube and then started tinkering.  Probably should go find an expert to get some pointers, but I'm pretty happy with the results I'm getting right now.  I can't imagine welding foil though... wow!

Jens:

it ain't welding if it didn't start out as two separate pieces!

then you are not cheating!

by cheating, i have seen a bead ran down a section of foil, pretty as you please, and it appears as though two piece were
welded together.
