Another English make

Our Bamfords Z4. With 8HP at 700 RPM and enough cast iron used in it's construction to make two Lister CS, it's real H-D English motive power. Notice there are no "girley" spoked flywheels to make my lights flicker? LOL We purchased this engine in a basket and have it almost ready to start, thought you guys would enjoy a picture of it. I have a thread on the English engine site discribing everything we have bene through getting it going. I think it will be mated to a ST-5 and used for stand by service at the house.

Bill, There is confusion about the date. The "guru" in England says the serial number is later than any he previously knew about. He speculates that he engine was assembled by an outfit called Puma Power Systems after the breakup of Bamfords. The data plate spec calls for Rotella oil. I remember the ads when it came out, 70s I think?

The 70ies you say for a build date wow looks like much older design. Did Bamfords build this design for lots of years just like lister?

Probably because:

- Until the North Sea Oil/Gas fields were discovered, we didn't have any oil of our own, so it all had to be imported, hence
- Diesels used less fuel than petrol powered engines - although there were loads of petrol stationary engines too
- Until WW2, we were still a major industrial power, able to develop & build world class heavy machinery

In fact, it probably wasn't until after WW2, when the empire started to collapse, and as the socialist disease that blights us today set in, that the UK really lost its ability to develop & build such things.

Meanwhile, you guys (IIRC) had almost no diesel infrastructure - everything was gasoline powered; hence, lots of US gas-powered engines, and not so many diesels... I guess because you had your own oil? e.g. look at all the nat gas powered Witte engines. Here in the UK we had a few gas (not gasoline) powered engines, they ran on town gas (a nasty mix of carbon monoxide & hydrogen).

I like the internal push-rods.  We have a lot of lava grit in the air here so the wonderful Lister external uppy-downies just aren't realistic.

We have the same problem here but can you believe these progressives blame it on the capitalists model burning the economy out and then moving to new locations like India and China where they don't have this terrible socialist malaise.

yup about the same deal as Lister and stopped about the same time as a lot of other industrial might went down the tubes, mid. 1980s

Disease, You got datchit rite Jan 1 2010 me have 0 diesels. Dec 1 I have, uhhh, 6,, I think.

Slinger flinger- I watched that site for a month before I dared post. I kinda cut the ice with Peter I think when I posted on his no text slang typing thread that I was having a heck of a time with the way the Brits screw up the AMERICAN  Language, LOL. I have to read some of the stuff several times to know what they are saying so I try to be carefull how I type over there.

And BTW, seen from my side of the North sea......the British had i good system, a shame on those unions ruining the British car industy in the 70's.......I still miss british build cars on the roads!
For that matter tractors too Massey Ferguson is made in France now and quality is as could be expected from there:-(

My old Massey's made in Britain and with Standard and Perkins diesels have never given me any trouble, but my 3080 from early 90's fell apart after 5000 hours....made in France....
