Sounds like your engine needs what they used to call on the diesel-Benz forum an "Italian tune-up."  That's where you take your clackety Benz out and drive it like it was a Fiat.  Really get it hot and run some fuel through it.  Does wonders for an engine that's been sitting for too long.
