I can draw a diagram and scan it and attach it after work today.

Yes, breaker before anything.    Your pump is 120 VAC not 240 ?  Doesn't really matter.

Mine goes like this (240 VAC):

Breaker --> 24 V Relay to turn pump on/off --> Well pump

24 VAC (wall wort transformer) plugged into simple timer --> 24 V 200-300 ft to storage tanks --> Float switch --> back to Relay at well.

The 24 V transformers are easy to come by.  They sell them separately for sprinkler timer boxes.   For that matter you can use a sprinkler timer, but they generally won't turn on water for more than a few hours at a time.   In my case the 24 V setup is especially useful because by running it up to the storage tanks for the float switch, only a small current has to travel that far and back, instead of the whole load of the pump.

My pump is 240V, I mentioned 120 since I thought that's what the timer was.
I need to run wire up to the storage tank, 400ft or so, CAT5 be okay? Then it's 600ft from the tank to the house.
For some reason I didn't even think of a wall wort!

Find out how many milliamps the relay needs.  Make sure that the voltage loss at that wire gauge and currant will not be too much.  (Chart.)  Probably OK.   Just think of telephone lines.   BruceM or someone else is better to answer that question.   I just use buried romex: one wire up, one wire back, same cable.

"Wall wart" I had to ask around to find out what that was! never heard a plug in transformer refered to that way before. I got a better one though, any one know what a "fox & hound" is ?
