Check out this fridge that uses only .1 kwhr a day. Located at http://ecorenovator.org  Look under most popular posts for the article.  Lots of interesting things on this site.

I've read lots about Pex hot water panels- bottom line is that they are very poor performers, about half that of copper tube panels. The heat transfer to the pex, and then to the aluminum fins is very poor.

The other BIG bugger for Pex panels-  if your pump or pump control fails, and the panel sits in the sun with no water flow, the stagnation temperatures (350F) will melt the Pex tubing, ruining your panels.

A very frustrating situation since copper prices are so high.

That freezer conversion to frig looks like a winner but my guess is many woman would turn there backs on that idea, mine would :(

I was planning on a dual chest setup for my off grid place; one refer, one freezer.  It does take up some floor space in the kitchen!  Then I took the easy way out and bought a propane refrigerator/freezer.

I find the performance figures highly optimistic- plenty of folks have done this, and I've seen articles on thermostat mods to do it.  No one is getting efficiency figures like those in this article.

In general I'd take everything on that website with a big block of salt.

We were looking for a chest freeze for a 1/2 beef and lamb we butchered.
I have a friend that sells Crosley, thats an old name.
After some research they do almost  as well as the the  Sun Frost type equipment, at 1/4 the cost.
We got a 15 cubic foot freezer for the price of a Sears with 10 year warranty.
It runs a honest 1kw a day with a Kill a Watt
