i went ahead and took a step and ordered one of the magnaflow diesel cat's

magnaflow 54104D  2"inlet and 2" outlet

i think i have enough heat at full load from the 195 changfa to light this puppy

its kinda cute, about 12" overall length 9"x5" body, and looks to be well constructed

i just gotta work out a mounting flange to get it as close to the exhaust port as possible
and then wrap it in fiber insulation, because i don't want to lose the heat but rather pass it on to the heat
exchanger.

the idea behind this cats use in my project is not so much that i am a greenie, (however i figure why not be clean if it is possible)
but rather to convert unburnt hydrocarbons to more heat and improve the quality of that heat for recovery in my exchanger.

the only concern i have it clogging with particulates, so i may have to wait to mount this till i get my particulate filter finished
and incorporated between the port and the cat.

now that i have this thing i am dieing to just attach it and see if i can light it up!

How are you making the particulate filter, and won't it cool the exhaust for 10 min till it heats up?

all i am going to comment on in regard to the particulate filter is this

size matters

this is one case where bigger is not better, and getting it too small either presents too much backpressure
or it gets overrun.

i may have to provide for a bypass until the exhaust temperatures get high enough for everything to function properly.

still in the design stages here, so i don't want to comment much about it until such time that i get a functioning prototype
going.

its nothing that is not already being done by the big boys, just scaled to a size appropriate to my needs, and so far i am unaware
of an off the shelf solution to fit a 10kwatt diesel engine.  (i gave up looking when i saw the prices commanded for the larger units)

What fuel will you be using? Reason I ask, is with a steady diet of WMO, I'd be concerned with metals in the WMO passing through and poisoning the catalyst.
It's not just a question of plugging it up - the metals in the exhaust can stop the cat from funtioning at ppm levels, in some cases.

But I'm sure you know this, and have already thought of it!

i had considered the poisoning thing, we were warned about all this on the tier 4 truck engine's
where you got to use compliant motor oils as well as the low sulfer fuels.

that might be another good reason for a bypass system, so that the system could be bypassed should
the need to run alternate and non compliant fuels be necessary.

thanks for reminding me though, it would be a shame to do all the work to get it working then ruin it with
crappy fuel mixes
