I am starting this topic so ideal pulley sizes can be recorded here. So please feel free to post what works for your setup.

I been working on an ideal pulley setup for engines that have a peak torque curve from 2500 to 2600 rpm's and I think I nailed it. I found a setup that you only need two pulley's for running either 1800 and 3600 rpm generator heads on the same platform with only minor governor speed changes on the engine without buying more pulley's. This will make it simple to do a gen-head swap later down the road a piece of cake.

I see it is important to think what if you burn out your good 1800 gen-head. And how can you get back up and running in the least amount of time if you only have a cheap 3600 rpm gen-head available. Well the pulley size and ratio that I came up with for the engine rpm range listed above will cover this.

Both pulleys will be machined for SK bushings to mount either pulley on the genhead. This will be ideal for changeover from 3600 to 1800 by just swapping the two pulley positions from an Engine with a stub shaft, to Gen-head. And back when needed.

I figured the ideal standard Pulley sizes will be 6 inches and 8.50 inches.
This setup would be make it easy to adjust engine rpm's for changeover since engine rpm's will be only 11 rpm's apart on either setup arangement.
Engine running RPM's will be:
2553 for a 1800 rpm genhead.
2542 for a 3600 rpm genhead.
Drive Pulley Ratio 0.705

But if you only want a 4 rpm differance make the pulley sizes 152mm and 215mm. Now were splitting hairs.
Engine running RPM's will be:
2550 for a 1800 rpm genhead.
2546 for a 3600 rpm genhead.
Drive Pulley Ratio 0.706

This is something to think about when building a gen-set.

I just got my pulley's in today and I can't wait to start the new genset project.

Here is the picture of the 152mm pulley on the Kubota EA300 engine.

Hey Henry,

Nice pulley. Very well machined.
Where did you buy it ?

Mike Montieth made the pulley's.
He did a very nice job on all the custom pulley's he made for my projects. Prices are very reasonable too.

I can't wait to get this project going. The great thing is I can use the same pulley's for a 1800 or 3600 rpm generator head.
Another great thing is when I want to use an alternator the 152mm pulley is the perfect size.

It turns out I have all ways covered.
