I was jut given several 55 gal drums  of jet fuel what is a good additive to get the lubrication factor up so I can run it in a air cooled Lister?   The guy started off saying it is aviation diesel never herd of it  asked him if it is JP4 and he said it is Jet fuel that's all I could find out about it. Bio-Diesel is the best lubricant based on the lab tests I've seen. Add 2% or more and you're good to go. Just how were so fortunately go come across this nice free bonanza of jet fuel???

Nice score on the jet fuel.  If I was going to run it in my pickup I'd add a cetane booster that contained a lubricant.  For the generator I'd just add a bit of whatever was handy.   2-cycle oil, WMO, whatever.  Jet fuel is almost identical to #1 diesel (aka kerosene).

I have my eye on a two-year old pile of Jet A drums at the airport here that are going to 'expire' in another month.  With pump diesel at $2 a litre I'll figure out how to burn it in everything I can!

I and several nearby friends have been using waste jet fuel in our Listeroids since 2005 as our primary fuel source. However, supplies fluctuate depending upon service performed on various aircraft. Having said this, the problem is jet fuel is designed to burn clean: There is virtually NO lubrication components. We have tried various additives from 2-stroke oil, clean motor oil (perhaps the least effective, to Opt-lube (best). Think about the fuel injector pump compressing the jet fuel several hundred times every minute, up and down, wear surfaces, rubbing, friction, all with NO lubrication in the fuel. We believe this is the weakest point.

I have been buying Opt-lube by the gallon and mixing it in as I add fuel to the tank at 100:1. I also toss in from time to time small left over quantities of 2-stroke oil, clean / never used motor oil, and a few gallows of pump diessel before it is allowed to go bad. This has worked extremely well for us. Cujet on this forum is very knowledgable on this topic as well as listerboy.

Thanks for the input I was in the right place at the right time to get it the airport is shutting down and the drums had to go I was there and could so I said yes:) and got it took a while to load and move but we got it moved and under cover. The inj pump was my big concern take one out and free is not such a good price. Thanks for the input .Tom T

"Bob is the Oil Guy" is the best source I've found for information on lubrication:

I posted a study from a lab that blind tests and a good lube was conventional TCW3 outboard motor oil. They tested walmart brand. The ratio they used was 200 to 1

Here is the link.  http://www.microcogen.info/index.php?topic=3190.msg35779#msg35779

Now you should find out if it is JP-4 or JP-8. JP-4 is very volitle and can ignite by static discharge.

JP-8 on the other hand is much safer. Pretty much kerosene with additives. It can be used to run in Diesel engines.

Here is a link to get info on different types of jet fuel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aviation_fuel

Here's a link to the study of many IP lube additives used with LSD where the 2% additive is compared with other products.

I believe that is the same study I posted.

A good mate of Mine works on Blackhawk Choppers and gets all the jet fuel he wants. For 3 years now he has been running the Avtur in his Common rail ute.

He runs 10 % Pure Biodiesel in the avtur but has also been using 10% Straight WVO and says the vehicle runs far better on either mix than on diesel.

There are other additives in avtur than kero or Diesel, mainly they are anti freeze properties.  Avtur is designed to remain liquid to -40oC. There are no lubricant additives in it because in a turbine engine there is no need for it to lubricate anything. It is sprayed through a Nozzle and burnt.

Doesn't JP-8 have some VERY nasty additives in it for lowering the flash point? Veterans of the first Gulf War have been treated at the VA for exposure to it as I understand things.
Maybe I'm confusing something else, it has been almost 20 years.
