changfa 1115 oil

I recently inherited one of these driving an ST-10 generator. I have the crappy manual and for engine oil it says to use

"GB5323:30#(No HC-14)".

For the life of me I can't figure out that the heck that is. I'm about to change it and don't know what to use. Once I figure out what that is, I would like to just use an equivalent synthetic. Any pointers?

i use 15/40 diesel rated oil myself

as Bob said, 15W-40. I have never seen that grade that wasn't diesel rated. Use a name brand, there are many good ones with Shell Rotella getting the most press.

WIth no filtration I wouldnt waste $$ on synthetic oil because  frequent changes are in order no matter what oil you use.  The only advantage to syntetics would be cold weather starting.

Thanks. I'm not very familiar with these or any other diesel for that matter. Like I said, I recently inherited this rig from a friend. He passed away without giving me much info on it. I actually thought the filter left of the throttle knob was for engine oil because he's got a fuel filter external to the engine. I guess that's really a fuel filter.

I have a feeling I'll be back here.

IMHO, the brand of oil you use and even the grade is far less important than the frequency of which it is changed.
Even the cheapest oils these days are a mile over spec for these old design engines.  I use what I put in my car.  Never had a problem yet.

Someone had a shot at me recently for using supermarket brand oil in my 23 yo truck. I showed them what was specced and how many grades above that the supermarket oil was.  The oil that was put in the thing for the first 5 years of it's life was probably a lot worse than this supermarket stuff that happens to be made by a brand name anyway. I happened to have that because I bought it like all oils, when it was on sale. I don't care what brand or weight it is, it all exceedes far and beyond what the engine requires.
The only thing is I keep an eye on the miles and change it when or before due.

To me, Thats' the only important thing.

a lot has to do with the type of service you plan on putting it under, and
what sort of filtration you are using?

if you replace the oil bath air cleaner and use a quality pleated dry filter (not one of those
k/n jobs, and if you are using good quality fuel with very good filtration you , and...

if you run the thing for longer run times, up to proper temperature, then

you can probably extend the oil change intervals

if on the other hand you are running down in the bottom of a dust bowl, run the crappy oil bath air filter, run crappy fuel and light loads? well?
