What's the torque setting for the cylinder head fasteners?
(It's not in my manual)

I presume your talking about the ListerCS Veggie.
Here is something I put together a while back when I did my ListerCS.
I should be accurate, but just confirm it 1st maybe!

Specs are for a 6/1 with the Indian 5-stud head, not the English Lister's which have 7 studs, as pointed out by quinnf futher down, thanks!

Veggie, those specs are for a 6/1 with the Indian 5-stud head.  The English Listers like WJ has have 7 studs, and the torque setting is considerably less than the spec for the Indian head.  Those Indian specs also appear on the Utterpower site at  http://www.utterpower.com/lister_s.htm

Torquing all seven studs to that level will overstress and possibly damage an English 7-stud head.

Some time ago someone asked me the same question on another board.  I replied with the same specs you were given, and someone with an English Lister jumped all over me until I pointed out the difference in the specs.

WJ, I don't recall offhand what the specs were for the English Listers.  I seem to recall it was around 120 ft-lbs, but that might be wrong.  Best to check with Peter who hangs out on the smokstak.com board.  Post the question and he'll pop up with all kinds of information.

Pfeew, thanks for that, if you used the settings already!

and Quinnf, thanks for pointing that out, we'll need to get the correct torque from Peter then.
I did amend my post on top.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but was there ever an answer for the 7-stud head?

Cheers!

It appears not.

Since you're new here, a resource you should be aware of is the old engine forum at www.smokstak.com.  Register there and look around until you find the Vintage Diesel Engine forum http://www.smokstak.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=60 and post that question.  I'd almost be willing to bet you money a guy named Peter will show up with the information.

It is not possible to correctly torque down a seven stud Lister CS head because the rocker gear gets in the way of 2 of the big head bolts. You need to leave the rocker assembly off to get to these 2 bolts.

The method I now use on my genuine 7 stud Lister CS is to leave the rocker assembly off and do a 3 stage torque method.
1   Torque to 45lbft the 4 main nuts and the 2 remaining smaller ones.
2   Torque to 65lbft the 4 main nuts and the 2 remaining smaller ones.
3   Torque to 100lbftl the 4 main nuts.
4   Fit rocker assembly and torque the last nut up to 65lbft.
5   Run the engine until  nice and warm, then remove the rocker assembly and re torque the big nuts to 100lbft and the smaller nuts to 65lbft then fit the rocker assembly and torque the last bolt to 65lbft.

Most of this information came from Peter forbes site http://www.oldengine.org/members/diesel/articles/rrchapt8.htm a very interesting bit of information.

Jens told me to tighten the head bolts until I here a "clink" and it get easier to turn, then back off 1/2 turn  :(

Engine is really easy to crank over now  ;)

SSSSSHHHHHHHHHH ...... I also told you to keep this top secret method quiet. Now look what you have up and done! Pretty soon everybody will start using this method and then what ?

2012 happens, thats what. I'll never find out if the cam goes first, or the idler gear.

When I started out with my Lister, I had to replace the head once. When I LOOSENED the bolt holding the rocker assembly, it broke off on the top thread.
OK, not to bad, took everything else off and get out the BIG pliers I thought!
As I tried to take the stud out, it broke off in the cylinder barrel!

I could $H!T myself, everything around here is metric, luckily an old timer had the correct taps and stuff to get the bits out and clean the thread!
