Been thinking about this little side project for some time. I got around to doing something over the past few days.  :)
My Changfa 190 is far too noisy for my neighborhood.
I decided to turn it into a permanent (and quiet) battery bank charger.
1000 RPM
1.2 kw
The output of the ST-2 head is wired for 120 volt and an IOTA 55 amp battery bank charger can be plugged into the ST.

A second automotive muffler will help to further lower noise levels.
Now she purrs like my Listeroid.  ;)

Very nice Mounting setup with the channel rail. I think I'll steal that Idea and make up a similar frame for a couple of my little engines. I swap between 12 and 24V alternators and an induction motor and this would make mounting and adjusting very easy.

I was looking at adding a car muffler the other day to shut mine up and wondering the best way to mount it but seeing your setup answers the question. I'd just raise it up a bit and put the muffler underneath.
With that sort of nice neat setup, it would be a lot easier to also at least partially enclose the engine to get a reduction in sound output.
Any barrier between me and the clatter would be great. unfortunately my horizontal isn't quiet at andy engine speed.

If this is just going to be a battery charger, why run an ST head instead of a car/ truck alternator? Do you want the 120V ability as a backup or something?
If that's the case and you are running veg oil or another free type fuel, I guess efficiency may not be as much of a priority as it is to people whom are paying for fuel.

As a matter of interest, how does what seems to me to be double handling in creating 120V and dropping it back with a charger for the battery bank compare efficiency wise to an externally regulated alternator?
You have plenty of spare groves in your pulley so would there be any benefit to you in adding an alt for the battery bank charging?

Very nice, neat and portable setup though.  I'll copy that idea for sure!  ;D

Glort,

I do have a Leese/Neville BLD2308 (140 amp) alternator and the necessary brackets to mount it on this base.
The thought did occur to me to use the 12 volt alternator.
As I understand it, the current setup may be more efficient.
Here's my take...

ST Generator head (90% effy) X Iota Charger ( 85% effy ) = 76%
Heavy Duty Automotive Alternater = Approx. 55%

With regard to the car type muffler - I have found to my dissapointment that fitting a "huge-Ass" muffler does very little to quieten a diesel engine. My biggest win in the noise department was to fit a "Rough-As" accoustic box over the top of the whole shebang and it was a fraction of the cost! It was also not a pretty thing but did the biz :D
