The back story.  I am trying to purchase a tractor and have been looking outside the Albuquerque NM area.    Used farm equipment goes for a premium here.

I've shipped cars across country using uShip.com to find a hauler.  I'm trying to do the same thing with a tractor, but the freight charge is above my threshold.  I'm not saying the quotes are to high, cause I don't do this often enough.  I am just looking for alternatives.

Anyone have any pointers to east to west freight haulers?

thanks

I have a friend traveling from TN to Phoenix in a month or two with an empty trailer to pick up an old car. He might be interested in defraying his fuel cost, I'll ask.
How heavy is the tractor and where is the pickup point? Probably 5500lbs or so is my old trailer's limit (yes I think he's going to take my old farm trailer).  I'm sure he won't go too far out of route, he's just that way.
Another place to look is on Smokstak.com they have hauling ads on there all the time. Usually a dollar or so a mile.

Aloha deeiche,

To move my Witte ( about 1000+ pounds) I finally made a connection for the 200 mile haul without being there through Smokstak.com.  I also advertised on this site, Lister Engine Forum and did a real shotgun on craigslist.  I thought $200 for a pick-up and delivery at residential sites was pretty fair.  I passed on the $150 in the back of my pickup "persons".  The good news is that tractors have big wheels and steer.  Some of them even run when you purchase them.  I'd be surprised if most car haulers wouldn't help you.

Hmmm, I wonder if it would be cheaper to load it into a container and have it shipped via rail?
