? on machining love-joy coupler

Hello. Just curious if anyone has done any machining on a steel lovejoy type jaw coupler. Are they really hard steel? Let me know what you think!

i am sure its possible that there are some very hard lovejoy couplers, i however have never seen one

to check their relative hardness, just take a corner of a file and see if you can file a groove in the back edge corner of one of the lovejoy
halves, my bet is they are no harder than mild steel.

been my experience with them anyway.

there really is no need for them to be hardened steel in my opinion, many are even made of aluminum.

Yup just as Bob said, never ran into a hard one myself.
Sorry if assuming too much here but messing with the bore is not for the average home shop. Not a job for a drill bit job but one for either a boring bar or a reamer while held in a tight fixture. This is due to the existing keyway and the need for both trueness and fit to the shaft. If you have the equipmnt bore at will

Thanks for your replys! I don't need to change the bore size. I just need to turn the outside down a little bit to fit inside a pilot on a flywheel so that it can be centered accurately. Sounds like it shouldn't be a problem.

A member here bored one out for me custom to fit onto a Delco alternator, said it was real easy and did a great job.

i think you can even buy them without the keyway, which makes boring them a much easier prospect
