SR2/ST5 powering the whole house right now. Warm and happy family thanks to homebuilt low tech genset. Neighbors might be envious!

What else can I run on WVO?
...Oh, and an old R-170

Yes it's back on. Transformer blew at the entrance to the subdivision. 3 hours 25 minutes generator run time.  I have  a Powersolutions ST5 head, vee belt driven to a Lister SR2 air cooled, running at 1400 rpm.  Both legs breakered at 20a.

It was dinnertime. We have a 2500 watt wall oven and we used it. Microwave too. 2 adults and 2 teenagers at home. I have a residential house with 3 tv's, computer, exterior lights on.  Big fridge, big freezer. (both on the same leg, gotta change that one day )   With the exception of the washer and dryer we had every circuit in the house on and very little concern to load shedding. My killawatt meters never showed less than 110 volts.

I used about 5 liters of diesel. Cheap thrill.

Will your SR not run at 1800 to allow a direct coupling of the genny to the crank ??  ???

TimSR2

It sure will. One day I'll find a nice 7.5 to 8kw SAE direct coupled head and do that.

Right now I run it slow to keep down the fuel consumption and noise. The engine is far larger than an ST5 needs so I underdrive it. I'm a big believer in heavy vee belts on large cast pulleys. Sure there is some lost efficiency  but they are so forgiving and can absorb so much abuse. I burn about 10 gallons of fuel a year so efficiency is not my primary concern.

I have an 1800 rpm SL1 that I plan on direct driving a 3 or 5 kw ST head through a Lovejoy coupling. At 4.25 hp I realize I am looking at 2.5 kw max but have a CS 6 also so a 5 kw head offers me some versatility.

It has been a year now since the power went out on Thanksgiving day. The whole of southern Vancouver Island was out for about four hours leaving many turkey dinners partly cooked.
Earlier in the day, I had invited a retired Diesel mechanic for a listen to my ST2, which he pronounced to be in good condition.   He looked over the whole installation with interest and said, "Nice , but you'll never need it."   Four hours later we were up and running.  Fourteen hours total over the next 12 months.

It is nice to have the last word sometimes.  dp

No, the power stayed on  but I'm ready for them.  On the hydro plant, falling leaves require almost daily cleaning until the stream runs clean.   dp
