As silly as it sounds, at least in my neck of the woods even an off grid installation requires building to code and an electrical inspection. Of course if you have no insurance to use weasel clauses then probably nobody really cares ....

My barn is classified as an "agricultural" building. As such, nothing is required to meet any codes, no permits are required expept for the permit I have that says I don't need permits.  I could string the walls with live bare wires if I wanted to...
