I guess this would be a good topic to start this time of the year.
Lets hear from you guys on how cold has it been when starting a Changfa type engine. And what did it take to get it running.

I started my ZS195 (Z stands for direct injected) in 34 deg. F with no starting aid by hand cranking. It only took the first try.

at 30 degree's F. and all the belt driven accessories, there is no way the engine will start via hand crank
and will only start with the electric starter with a whiff of starter fluid.

so a glowplug which was in the original plan will definetly be a reality for cold weather starting.

my engine is the changfa 195 idi engine.

The head was off the 1100 when it got to the teens here, but it would start fine by hand in the 40's.
Had to really crank it though.

Hey guys,

Do you think we should use a 10-30 oil in cold weather? I know cranking it the last time and when the oil pump primed there was lots of resistance. I had enough inertia to keep it going to start it though.

A good oil pressure regulator would probably be very helpful in cold weather starting in my opinion
i know even when it is warm hand cranking become much more difficult just as soon as the oil pump
starts to build pressure.

it probably takes a half hp to drive the pump in freezing temps!

and i know i can't develop a half hp on a good day, with my whole body, much less one arm!

even if i could that would still leave no extra to actually crankup the engine with,

The coldest I have ever started a changfa type is around 35F (ZS1110M Rufa engine).  It will start right up at this temperature with the starter and no aids, the only thing I noticed was a slightly slower cranking speed probably due to cold oil and metal.

It is direct coupled to a 10kw st and is located indoors in my attached garage where it does not ever get below freezing.  Attached is the RUFA logo.                                                                                 flywheel
