I do not approve of the use of a ammeter or also a fuse in series with the ground terminal on the way to the batteries.  Looking into the ground terminal of a source the reliability of that ground needs to be trustworthy.  A misshap could burn out the ammeter, open the fuse or both and the ground would no longer be a 'ground'.
