Anyone driving the generator with V-Belts (A or B belts) running on the OD of the flywheel?
If so, how is it working out?

with a good belt, i see no reason why it wouldn't work

southbend lathes did just that on some of their underdrive units
the motor had a small V pulley driving a V belt, which was used to drive a much larger flat pulley

those guys that thought this was some hokie bullcrap, and replaced the flatbelt pulley found out that the
change over would then slip.

god knows why, but it works, so i can't imagine why it wouldn't work as well on a lister/oid with its 20 plus inch flywheel
with a decent set of quality belts.

guys are driving with the inside of serp belts, therefore the surface area can't be any more than that of a pair of B section belts
can it?  i haven't actually done the measuring but i bet a pair of B belts would have more surface contact on the inner V surface
than a typical 8 groove serpentine, or even a 10 groove for that matter.

One thing to watch out for when running industrial Power belts, is they are designed break when loaded with to much torque. I just came from Washington Belt today, they wouldn't sell me an industrial power belt, because it was hooked to a diesel prime mover... I said even if my alt has a ramp up...still no...because of the diesel application.

Automotive belts are designed to take the torque and not break...they enter their plastic region..when to much torque is added...then when the torque is removed they fall back to original specs...with maybe some minute stretching.

JUST REMEMBER..it doesn't matter what came first, as long as you got chickens & eggs.
Semantics is for sitting around the fire drinking stumpblaster, as long as noone is belligerent.

mobile_bob,

Good point about the surface area. Perhaps it would be a good idea to add an extra belt to the whatever HP ratings are recommended as an additional safety factor. I usually use a SF of 2 for single cylinder diesels.
