The Caterpillar C0.5 and Perkins 402C-05 or 402D-05 rear bearing can hold a very good side load without any support.

Perkins sent me technical data on the maximum allowable load versus overhang, on the Caterpillar C0.5 and Perkins 402C-05 or 402D-05 at rear and front of crankshaft.

Open the attachment below that reads: Perkins 402D-05 Side Load.pdf

On the left of the graph's. Max. allowable load, R is the center of the pulley, (N)=Newton, which is force. So all you have to do is go to an on line Force Converter and convert Newton to Pound-Force (lbf).

At (127mm) / 5 inches away from the rear of the block the crank can safely support (1350 Newton) / 303 Pound-Force.

Here is the converter I used. http://www.unitconversion.org/unit_converter/force.html

If you want a simple setup to carry lots of side load Flywheels setup to carry side load is a very good design and will hold almost anything you put on it. Flywheel spent lots of time and effort to come up with his simple design and it shoud last a long time. It is also a simple setup to service.
