I'm fairly familiar with the 4bt, it is a very tall engine so it won't fit under some vehicles hoods. Also since they are fairly popular for conversions and somewhat rare the cost is steep.

In my case I have a '71 International Travelette 4 door long bed pickup. It blew a head gasket a couple of weeks ago. I want to turn it into a 4X4 diesel, so the hunt is on for a wrecked Dodge pickup as a donor vehicle. This will also convert the truck to disk brakes on the front which would be a nice addition.
Ahhh, you are going to make what IH should have done when they put diesels in some of their "light" vehicles in the 70's.  Not like the Nissan SD-33T in my 1980 IH Scout.

My 1980 Scout with the Nissan SD-33t was a good vehical. The only problems I remember was glow plugs replaced 3 times and a starter twice. Boy was the starters for that engine were expensive. I think in the mid 80's I paid 800.00 for the frist replacement. Other than those issues the engine was reliable.

Never said it was unreliable, but even with the Turbo it was under powered.  I replaced the starter once on mine and I'm pretty sure some of the glow plugs were gone by the time I sold it.  I bought it in '86, sold it in '89.  I seem to recall it had a pretty short oil change interval too, I was putting 800 miles a week on it.

I test drove a non-turbo Traveler once, which is a Scout stretched 18". It was a dawg. This should be an interesting project if I can find a donor vehicle.

I find them on craigslist around here, just search for cummins (with 2 m's).  Also, search for "12 valve".
You might also check the junkyards.

I'm not afraid to take anything apart.
I am sometimes afraid I'm not going to get it back together.
