You sure that isn't a Russian truck washing method?   :D

The Indian video was posted on here before.
That's the one Casey called BS on me for saying I started an old VW Beetle by spinning the rear tire by hand.
And I did to done it Casey! ;-)

Dear vdybnyt62m,

I called BS on you? or on a story that it could be done with the truck on You-Tube video.  If I did call BS on you, I withdraw the schoolboy remark and apologize.  Your saying you saw it happen is good enough for me.

i don't know if i could reliably start an engine using that method, but
i have seen a gas engine in the shop start simply by turning the key on!

the key when turned on provided a spark which set off one cylinder that was just past tdc on the power stroke, it was enough for the engine to come right to life without hitting the starter.

i suspect the youtube truck is a rather small 4 banger diesel, probably fully warmed up, and then i could see it happening... probably not with a larger 6 cylinder engine though, not without a lot of spinning of the rear wheel.

the mechanical advantage is horrible from the wheel end

the spider gears will just about double the rotational speed, then given a typical 4:1 rear end ratio, you have an effective 8:1 step up ratio, before it gets to the tranny
the tranny would have to be in high gear or you would have another step up which would reduce the torque even further.

by the time you got done, the resulting torque would be very low

also considering an olympic athlete is capable of producing about a half hp on a bicycle, that using his legs predominately, its hard to fathom an average joe being able to deliver even a quarter hp with one arm spinning a set of dual's

a quarter hp driving a set of spider gears, the ring and pinion, direct through the transmission to the engine, might equate to what?  maybe an eighth hp?

yup, probably a hard way to start a truck on a cold morning?
