I had a friend give me a 1986(?) Yanmar 3TN66UJ (16hp) engine - A small liquid cooled 3-cyl diesel from an old John Deere riding lawnmower, a 230 or 330 or something like that. It has a keyed stub shaft attached to the flywheel.

This is for a standby emegency gen that my wife can go out and "key-start" and have power (if needed) at times when I am not home.

The engine will only start if a little ether is added, so I know it's worn out.

Where is a good place to source Yanmar engine parts, or am I forced to go through John Deere for parts?

Hi LinkTex
Don't give up on this quest quite just yet.
I have a 1980 JD 950 tractor. It was a Yanmar 3000 with a 3 cylinder 3TN93 engine repainted from Yanmar red to JD green. Won all of the fuel efficiency tests in it's size rang at the time. Yep. Expensive parts through Deere.
Missouri brother-in-law lusted after it (a pry from my cold dead hands thing!) and then bought from a Texas company a grey market imported used Yamnar 3000. The same, but different without our required safety modifications and a 1000 RPM PTO versus my JD speced 540 RPM PTO.
Google search "Yanmar tractors" and you will find this company. Don't know first hand how well they do on parts.

Steve, I have a Deere 850. I agree, they are great tractors. Mine has a 3TN84J engine.

Here's the problem: I don't think Yanmar used these engines in ANYTHING other than a Deere tractor. I might try Hoye - I have bought parts from them before (made in China :-[  )  for my 2-cylinder YM2000.

If I can find another application that used a 3TN66U or UJ I will be able to buy parts without being FORCED to go to the !%$@%#^*&( Deere dealer (which is a "hateful-towards-parts-customers" kind of place)

Well, the summer projects are done, and it is time to start tinkerin' again.

Still haven't torn this engine down yet... any good source of Yanmar parts besides Deere & Co.??
