During the summer I put together a small 4kw gen set using a Changfa R190 engine.
I did not have a lot of time, so I tried a new way of fabricating a base.
I used Unistrut electrical framing and the necessary fittings to bolt it all together.
Took me all of 2 hours to build the unit. Another hour to rig the exhaust system.

Here is the unit at 1800 rpm (Emergency power mode)

Here is the unit in battery bank charge mode (1150 rpm @ 1kw load simulating the IOTA battery charger)
Takes about 10 minutes to swap over.

looks good and I suspect more than strong enough for that engine.  I guess you just swap out the engine pulley and belts for change over.  does it make much difference to the governor response at those slow speeds and does it even matter if you are using it for battery charging

Hi carlb,

This engine is much quieter at the lower speed, so if I need to run it for 4 hrs. per day drawing 1000 watts for bank charging (~80 amps@12 volt), it's better to do it at 1150 where the engine is 90% loaded.
The engine will spend most of it's life at that speed.
The 1800 rpm mode is for emergencies or when my primary gen set craps out.

At 1150 it's very hard to hear the engine when the garage door is closed.
Here's my muffler test from outside the garage....

I suspect my barrel muffler (now under construction) will help even more.
