The sealed batteries CAN take a very high charge rate, till they are about 90% full.  Then your charger MUST behave as a multistage charger, and "throttle back".  When the electrolyte begins to bubble/gas, the re-combiner catalyst activates, and generates water to replenish the cell.  If you overcharge at this point, you pressurize the cell, and eventually blow the safety valve, permanently loosing "water" that you cannot replace.
