We were lucky, about 6 miles west, 6 wiles north, about 23 miles east some spots look like a battle zone. I was in the middle of all this going to pick up my wife at the train station. Well trees were over the tracks so there were lots of delay's. It turned out I decided to drive to the Raleigh train station to get her because noone knew how long it would take for the train to get to the Cary station. Well at least I had enough sence to bring Jonsered along. I had to cut my way threw on one street but my daughter and I made it to Raleigh to get my wife. We never saw tornado damage like this before. We lost phone service and internet connection until about 30 min ago. It has shown my wife how important it is to be prepaired for the worst and she is putting together a list on needed things.

I think this is an eye opener for many here. The weather can get pretty rough here at times and many take it for granted that Emergency crews can handle things ok.

My father told me just before he past away back in 1976 to never rely on the government to take care of you. This always stuck with me. I see he had the wisdom to tell us kids to be prepared to take care of ourselves and not to rely on the government to do it because they will fail. My father was in WWII and my guess is he saw first hand how the government responded at times. The government intentions are mostly sincere in emergency situations but when the situation is to great this is when people have to rely on family, friends and yourself.

I think a tornado just missed us. There are downed trees and limbs all over, and lots of trees with the tops ripped out. We lost one big tree that took out some branches of one of our pecan trees, a few smaller trees, and some shingles off the roof. Otherwise, we came out ok. A lot of people right around us lost more trees but I haven't really seen in buildings damaged in my immediate area. Go a mile down the road and it's like nothing ever happened. Other parts of Raleigh were not nearly so lucky.

Our power went out about 3:30pm (I think -- it was whatever time the front got close to us) and didn't come back until about 11:00. Because I don't have the 'roid running yet, we had to use the screamer. Dammit. ;-)
