Oil Filter Element - Hydraulic oil filter for crankcase oil

I have several of these Donaldson hydraulic oil filter "spin-on" cartridges which fit the filter housing of the Listeroid oil system I'm building.
Does anyone know of a reason why these can't be used for crankcase oil?
They are a 25 micron element just like the FRAM automotive element that fits the same housing.
They are dimensionally identical also.

thanks,

Jens brings up a good point, hydraulic spin on filter housings often have the bypass valve built into the housings
and not in the filter like engine oil filters have.

Jens & Bob,

Good points.
In this case I am using a hydraulic system filter housing which has a built-in bypass valve.
So, if there are no other concerns and the filtering media is essentially the same, I will give them a try.

I visited the Donaldson website and the media seems to be the same stuff as the automotive elements.
I was also able to dimensionally cross the filters to an automotive FRAM model.
Turns out to be a perfect interchange with a Ford tractor filter. :)

Once these hydraulic elements are used up, I can stock up on the FRAM model.

thanks guys,

I added a full-flow external oil filter onto my JD175A using one of these Donaldson hydraulic oil filters and the holder that has the built-in bypass valve.  It works fine and have had no issues with filter media.  I also use these same Donaldson filters for diesel fuel and used whatever oil for fuel.

rcavictim,

Thanks for the feedback. Always good to get a real life example.
