Black Friday

I've heard lots of talk of "Black Friday" (which I think is today?), but no explanation as to why today should be Black Friday, and why it's covered in sales & special offers.... Can someone explain

black friday historically in this country is the day that the large retailers go from all the red ink of the year into the black ink
and profitability for the year.

the large retailers hang on by their teeth right up till the day after turkey day each year, when the big rush starts and the money
starts rolling in.

kind of like tax freedom day for us working stiffs, where we work for the government up until something like late may before we get to
start working for and keeping money to use as we see fit.

My Wife and I always make a game out of it and manage to have a ball.
OK I'm whipped and I'll admit it. But I did score a very nice pair of diamond ear rings for the Wife.
Hey, things like this have gotten me out of a couple tight spots over the years
