I didn't really have to read beyond the bit about the exhaust being sweeter than the intake air. That certainly defies any common scents

No news to you CSI fans but most modern cars don't have enough carbon monoxide to kill someone piping it into the passenger compartment with a big hose.  Oh, your gonna die or live with brain damage and continued depression from oxygen deprivation but you're not going down due to carbon monoxide poisoning.  If you can't trust CSI Las Vegas who can you trust?
