Sorry for not adding my 2 cents every now and then. I just get lazy from time to time. I do have a comment on the below. I think it will come up blue?

One of the problems here is that these bacteria need oxygen and the more bugs that are out there eating up the oil the more oxygen needed. If I am not mistaken there are areas of the gulf that already had an oxygen dead zone.

This gulf oil spill is a giant FUBAR, poor regulation
The world financial system is a FUBAR, poor regulation
Football US or Soccer, what ever, would be a mess without rules
Rules or regulations are not all bad, we just need some good sensable ones. Hard to get with lobbyist shoveling money like Sh!t all over the place.

We have the best government that money can buy. You in the US or else where as we do in the Bahamas.

We all need a government that governs more and politics less.

Sorry about the politics.

Chris

No point in spraying an oil spill in the gulf with oil-eating bacteria - it's already there in amounts that wouldn't be augmented by man in any meaninful way.

Corexit 9500 and other dispersants make the oil available to the bacteria quicker (smaller droplets, larger surface area, bigger interface with the ocean) - that's part of how it works and why it's used.

Other "chemicals" - like sugar and some fertilizers - will be applied to help the bacteria multiply and eat up the oil as fast as possible. Problem with this is it's a massive amount oil that may take a good amount of time to decrease to a level that the public will shift it's fickle gaze away from, and go back to demanding cheap gas and gobbling it up as fast as it's produced.

You are correct regarding the oxygen deficit in areas of the gulf most affected by the oil spill. For the most part, this is of prime concern to vertebrate life in the water - fish, crustaceans, krill, larva of all kinds, etc. - then planktons and alga.

In my experience, the bacteria are the least affected, so it's never been a concern - at the air/water interface, there's plenty of oxygen, water, and sunlight, so those bacteria do best there anyway.

No question that more oxygen would help, though. But like "salting" with more bacteria, no real meaningful way to do it. Wave action (interfacial gas exchange) does more than any scheme cooked up by man could ever do.

Who knows? Somebody might come up with a really good idea - but right now, it might get lost in all the noise...

As for putting more oxygen into the water, we could ship all those black, jack booted storm trooper riot police thugs that were at the Toronto G20 Summit and send them out into the gulf waters to beat the water with their clubs.  At least there they could perform a useful function for humankind.

Never ever thought I'd see the day in Canada where peaceful protesters singing our National Anthem would be attacked by these peabrained hired goons.

I'm sort of hoping that it will happen - it gets kind of boring out here in the sticks...
