General Discussion / Re: Lister Engine Forum Down?
December 25, 2011, 07:26:51 PM
Yeah, I too tried to log in.  Came here to see if
a.  this site was down too
b.  What happened might have been posted

Since the merger of the ADM for both forums, it has been nice to have it up.  Crappy time to fail though

General Discussion / Re: 70 MPG Diesel Geo Metro

I bought a VW Beetle, 2000 model for $2100 Cert on the road.  I get over 55 MPG, has AC and runs really strong.

With cars like that avail, why go through the hassle?

In the 1930's Canada imported against USA neutrality laws American Armoured Tanks and Scrap... that scrap was used to train the start up Canadian Armoured Corps,,, the scrap FT7 tanks still live in CFB Borden as monuments to Canadian Armoured

If you could find a Canadian who had an engine in Parts in his truck going to sell it for scrap value, or an American looking to buy scrap, and you could not get it working - no fuel pump say.. whats the bother :D

I think we can provide a larger readership, and with the tools in the newer software, we can let those that want to talk engines, or WMO can do so... The old LEF name will still point people to the new site so the links and such will continue to work.  We have no plans on letting that name disappear or end up pointing to a Viagra site.

Troy is not answering my emails
the server is not in his basement but it would appear he has lost all his sites
im done... i wanted upgrades to log in...no, i wanted to increase the people running it... no, I wanted it upgraded... nothing, i offered to buy the site twice... nothing

i stayed out of loyalty to the posters... im now done

I've never understood Troy's apparent total lack of interest in his forum - especially given he's had loads of offers of help over the years.

I, for one, was (and still am) immensely grateful for the efforts you put into keeping LEF going, despite all the mountains you had to climb.

Meantime, if you fancy doing the same job here, I'm sure you'd be welcome! It's much easier.... I've only had to reject 2 spam users in the last few weeks - although some of the names people choose really does cause some head-scratching.

Anyway, unless I resurrect lister-engine.com as a specific LEF replacement, I reckon here's as good as anywhere to settle in & talk slow-speed diesels.

2???  Thats a bloody vacation... in the end the bots were so bad that I had to shut down registration, then post that I would be open for 1 week, and for people to send me their notice so I could find them and approve... Over Christmas I opened the registration for 4 days... in the first 10 hours I was at over 150  NEW Members...at the end I was at over 600...so I approved those who emailed me... which was about 10 guys, then mass deleted the rest.  All we needed to do was add the CATCHA free service and it would have solved everything... but no.. easy to say no when you are not having to do the MODERATION and registration approvals.

I offered twice, once with JohnF to buy the site  he said he would think about it.  Nothing.  I use hosting 4Less for my two sites... they provide everything, do the backups, load balancing, etc and it only costs $140 per year.  Tanknet.org has been there with no issues and a lot more hits for nearly 13 years... No issues... this is just frustrating... more so for me because I know what can be done and I have to field all the complaints and questions.

Look I understand how and why this place started, hell if I had access to the posts I would have imported them here long ago.  I did not.  As for the past, I never had a beef with the people here, I just did not like the tone of a few who used the site and turned so quickly... I dont like to kick someone when they are having a problem.. and the big outage was Eastern European connected.  But I tried to keep it running so that everyone could harvest what was there... I have send a note for the last time asking to buy it out... if I get it I will work with the good people here to import that knowledge for all to see.

thanks for the job offer... same rate of pay and less work... very attractive LOL

Ok, I put mine in the garage.

Took if off the pickup truck, dropped it on the cement pad, drilled two holes in the pad to put in some of those metal threaded things into, and crowbared the whole thing over the wholes.  This allows about 1 inch of movement.

I put bolts in, not tight, just in so that the unit could not walk away.

Connected my 10/1 and started it.  Works great.  Have about 12 days run time on it.  My Rad and Fuel is mounted to a display cart on wheels.  The fuel lines are rubber and with enough slack to take up movement and vibration, the Rad is connected using long rubber hoses, again to make up for any movement

So the engine sits on the Pad, on IBEAMS, and has a hypnotic movement to it, but it does not walk, or vibrate through the house.  this is the second unit I have mounted this way, with no issues

Andrew (aka T19) did, as far as I can tell, as good a job as he could have done under the circumstances. He also struck me as a very honest man, and someone who wouldn't double-cross you no matter what the circumstances. I believe this is why he's not prepared to undermine LEF's admin, no matter what happens.

And I, for one, admire him for that. He's got his principles and stuck to them. I wish more people were like that.

I also know that some of the comments that were aimed his way cut him deeply; and some comments really pissed him off, a lot. That's the reason he turned his back on this forum; and frankly I don't blame him. If I'd been on the receiving end of similar comments, I'd not be here either.

So, let's cut him a little slack, eh?

Now, LEF's admin, on the other hand, I genuinely don't understand why he refuses all offers of help, and seems happy to let LEF drop out for days - now weeks - at a time. And yet, the occasional communication that does find its way out of his bunker seems to show genuine concern & a desire to rectify the issues.

Anyway: Enough. It'll be great if LEF returns; but no big deal if it doesn't. This forum is really starting to take on a life & identity of it's own now, and I think it'll stand on its own two feet.

Just my £0.02 ($0.033 approx).

Thanks
Just for the record, I never said the owner or anyone else walks on water.  There was only ever one perfect human, and if memory serves me correctly he had a very crappy Easter.

Look, I have been asked to raid the cookie jar, both politely and not so politely.  I will not do something I consider unethical.  Notice the word "I".  I would have liked to see the site migrated quickly, but I also run a number of other sites and I know how frustrating it can get between the ISP, the Software Tech Support and the users all wanting their needs taken care of, so I cut the owner some slack and I have been loyal.  I have no intention of doing something else just for the internet, because I still look at myself every morning I shave... and so far the guy looking back has nothing to be ashamed of.

Jens, I have nothing against you, its just your style of saying I don't know, always has to have that hidden kick in the stones with some self advertised message.  thats not wrong, or bad, just grates on me.
BTW have you considered a career in politics, seriously, they are looking for guys like that to sell their message, and all parties are doing a crappy job at it right now, your focus and joy de vie would help I am sure. ( BTW that is serious, not ironic, or a put down)

Guys, I work in a job that... lets just say the Taliban and the Olympics are not my fav topics these days as they are making live miserable.  Add to that I am in the middle of moving (house with bigger Mans Cave) and just bought a new Harley, well with the old site down, I have focused my time elsewhere for a few weeks to take a break, smell the diesel so to speak.  I see the old site has moved, the admin now posting, and adding upgrades... kewl.  I see this site, growing and some good posts too, again kewl.

Frankly the sandbox is big enough, dont see why both can't play nice.. maybe even merge some day... but not right now.  Anyways, Im off for a ride, and feeling great.

Listeroid/Petteroid/Clones / Re: Just getting started

You might want to consider 3 inch deep seismic anchors.  I just finished building the new Operations Center for the CF and we had to make sure it would survive an earthquake... yeah in Ottawa on the Canadian Shield no less.

Anyways We had used the drop in types that opened up.  The Engineer we hired said they were great for a steady state load, but one that was moving (vibrating) would tear them out.  The bolts we ended up using are tested to hold during horizontal and vertical stresses.  I believe they are $9 Cdn each.. but sure work great  Just ask to make sure they meet US seismic standards... Canada does not have any, but we are adopting US standards in 2010

cheers

while i might be the admin, i am no grand master of this software
and it just became easier to take down the whole thing.

btw, thanks to the member who reported it, and i did not delete
your post for any reason other than it was just easier to get rid
of the spammer that way,

and had i left the post, it would have been a bit confusing

admin

Copy their IP and add that to your Ban list, otherwise the little bugger will be back with a new name.

you will find that a lot of new users come from weird service providers from ru or UK or AE... most are spammers.  Welcome to my world... pain in the backside... but interesting to see the new software handles this a poorly as the old.
