PM generators / Re: Perkins 402c-05 & utterpower PMG

Any other info on the 6kw head?  I don't see anything on the web site.

Very nice project.  Keep the updates coming.

Efficiency of rectifier isn't a problem is it?  Measured voltage drop across diodes and DC current gives losses in watts.  Maybe I'm missing something. I haven't thought it through.

Should be able to find published losses of running 60hz trans. at 400hz that would get you in the ballpark with a little interpolation.

Good luck.  I'm just thinking out loud.

How hard would it be to measure the rectified DC and work backwards to get the 500hz AC current?  Or are you looking for more precision?

Wow. Nice looking set. Doesn't look that old. How did you end up with it?

Nice setup!  What speed will the Perkins be cranking?

Look forward to the performance reports.

Seems like a well developed engine, the 195.  So much of what we buy here in the US is from China and I know some of it is good quality.  Not sure I like the idea of stocking parts due to political influences.  It may not be any easier getting parts from Japan or Germany years from now either.  So it's on to performance.

What are the differences in running and maintaining a 195 vs. something more modern?

I'm not asking which is better. I imagine each has strong points and limitations. My question is why buy a 195 or 1115 over a good used Kubota, yanmar, perkins etc?  Everything seems to be compromise, so what are the trade offs?

I like the simple design of the horizontal Chinese singles but I have a Kubota dealer next door so it's worth considering.  Will parts likely be around for a S195 twenty years from now?

Any and all advice is welcome. I'm still planning my system. No dreams of going off grid if that makes a difference.

Bob, thanks for all the work and effort and even more so for sharing.

I hate to hear about your health and the effect it has on your work.  I do hope that your Dr. can find something that works well for you.

Look forward to hearing more from you on a very interesting topic.

Thanks Brett.  I looked through some of your old post after I asked.  That's about what I had figured out but thanks for clearing things up.  It's actually pretty clear now, so good job.

BS-ST mod sounds interesting.  Do all the ST heads bring all the coil wires out?

Most of the engines I've seen BSFC curves for show the lowest value just above peak torque. I can't grasp why fuel usage is higher at low rpm when windage and frictional losses are lower. Is it thermal trasfer that is killing efficiency?

Any idea what the power and efficiency are like at low rpm?

Thanks for posting the link.  I had been curious about the relationship between excitation voltage and output voltage.

I had thought of this but never considered the reduced airflow.  Good catch.

RJ,

I never knew such record existed.  I'll pull the tires being used as a cover off and look for a name plate.  Thanks for the tip.
