Bad idea Veggie!
What is my r165 water cooled sitting on the shelf next to the 165f air cooled going to think?
They have been friends for a long time.

Thats a very nice looking engine, it looks great.   I'm starting to feel guilty that I have not reassembled my MD yet.

I guess being retired means there is no hurry, this is a union job ain't it?

reviving an old threat here.....

Hey Flywheel,
I finally found one of those air cooled diesels like yours.
I have not tried it yet. I just un-boxed it. Got it from a friend.
Looking forward to playing with it.
How has yours been since you first posted your pictures.
Does it run well? Anything to report?

Here's mine.....

Mine is just fine and its the quietest little engine I have.  The reason its just fine and quiet is its just sitting on a shelf, never been fired up.

... - I'm trying to learn how to use the camcorder. ...

You may have to break down and read the manual!  ;D

Its not the camcorder but the size of the file in HD.  That video was 576990 kb BEFORE it was converted from AVCHD to mpeg.  That video was also NOT produced in the camcorders finest quality setting.  I wonder how large the file would be in the 1080/60p setting, the highest quality video for this camcorder.

In the mean time, I'll wipe the drool off my monitor. I WANT ONE!

Last year I bought a new panasonic SD600P high Def camcorder.  Never owned a camcorder so this is all new to me.  This video is the second video I made with it.

This video was made in Feb of 2011,

There is no audio - I'm trying to learn how to use the camcorder.  I had to buy a video converter to change the format from AVCHD to Mpeg format  so I could post on youtube.

I always timed out on youtube as the files were to large.  <iframe width="1280" height="720" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/-_7NfiO3nVk?hd=1" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

It is a walkaround showing the engine before it was taken apart for a rebuild.

am looking for head gasket for witte 12hp diesel generator serial # 23674 noticed a post about a company that makes them but no contact info. Can you help me.

Google any of the following.
www.lubbockgasket.com
www.cometic.com
www.gasketstogo.com

I had mine made by lubbock gasket, high quality, $40 plus shipping.  You will need to send your old gasket or a good tracing.  If your gasket has a fire ring let them know the compressed id of the fire ring on your old gasket.

Placing a shim or shims of the proper thickness between the rod and rod cap is how the bearing clearance is adjusted.  Without shims a new set of rod bearings will probably be to tight.

You may need shims on each side of the rod and cap to obtain the proper clearance.   Use plastigage to check clearance - from auto parts stores like NAPA.

There must be clearance between the bearing and crankshaft for proper oiling of the bearings.  If there none your bearings probably won't last 15 minutes before your engine locks up.

Double sumps, there are two oil drain plugs/caps, one on the rear of the crankcase and the other on the base next to the oil filter.

Hey lowgear
It's going to run some kind of genhead at some point. The sump may be already be in use for something. i will have to go look but I know there is a dipstick and there is a copper line and a valve of some sort coming out of it. I will let you know

The dipstick in the sump is where you check the engine oil, the MD has a sump in the base and one in the crankcase.
The crankcase sump overflows into the base sump.

That thing you call a valve on the side of the base sump with the copper line is the oil filter.  You turn the T handle to clean the filter/screen located inside the sump.  Not really much of a filter, you will probably find chunks from the underside of the piston in the lower sump.

Does the copper line go to oil pressure guage and then to the side cover on your engine? It appears you also have a filter mounted on top of your engine.

Attached is a pix of the filter/screen located in the base sump.

Hello everyone just thought I would show everyone what I just hauled home. WOW what a piece of IRON!
Now the fun begins! So far  I know I'm needing an EX rocker arm, I have 2/3 of the broken one. Don't have the end with the lash adjuster.
I pulled the head and the valves and seats don't look to bad. Ex valve looks near new and guide doesn't feel worn at all. Intake valve doesn't look new but it's not bad, guide has wear but still servicable I believe I will give them a Lapping and call that good for now.
I have not pulled the piston and rod yet but all feels ok, one thing I noticed,
there is no oil slinger on the rod. I run a magnet around the crankcase sump but I found nothing with magnet. I did find some pieces of material that look like coal....bout the size of a thumb nail 1/4"-3/8" thick???
I haven't got a manual for it yet, fellow I bought the unit from said he has one and will send it soon as he finds it. I probably will not go much further with the teardown til I get one.
PLEASE advise me of any pitfalls you all can think of that I will or may encounter. Thanks
PS hope I can get my pics to post!

Nice to have another 12hp Witte MD owner aboard - welcome.

The nonmetalic coallike pieces you have found in the crankcase are probably coming from the underside of the piston.  You can check for a buildup there with a flashlight and maybe a small mirror.  Probe the area with a long screwdriver or similar to see if you can loosen some of it and compare it with what you have already found.   I would bet it will be the same.  I also found a few smaller chunks in my crankcase upon disassembly of my MD. There is mention of this buildup in the owners manal.

A owners manual on CD is available, send me a pm if you would be interested.  I covers more than just the MD model and does have a lot of info.

You can tell if your engine has/had a oil splasher by removing the bottom con rod nut and look to see if there is a machined out circle larger than the con rod bolt.  The MD uses a very stiff piece of wire for the splasher - at least mine does.  I believe I have also posted a pix of the oil splasher in my posts on the MD Diesectric.

Some nos and replacement parts are still available.

Is this engine the one from N. IN?

I'm in N IL, where are you located?

He just refunded me $125.

I now have an R170 to play with.

I think he figured that it would be easier to take a smaller profit, than to pay for all that shipping, and get a negative feedback.

It would be nice if he were honest to begin with.

So now, do I just run this thing, or do I take it apart and look everything over?  Are the gaskets (especially the head gasket) reusable?

Thanks for all your support guys.

I would just remove the rear cover and have a look inside. Maybe take one of them mirror on a stick thingies for hard to see places and that will tell you what you need to know.

The Chinese engines are NOT sand pits like the Indian stuff.  If you should need a head gasket one can be obtained from Kim, the parts guy in canada and his contact info can be found in the parts section of the forum.

If its clean just run it and have fun.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 flywheel
