I have a two pole 6.8kw genhead on an 12hp tapered shaft engine with a broken conrod.  I have removed the rotor / armatures from tapered shaft engines before without any real difficulty, but this one is being real stubborn.  Normally I would remove the center bolt on the rotor and insert a long rod then thread a bolt into the threaded end of the rotor and just push the rotor off the engine crankshaft.   This one is not budging and pulled the threads out of the end of the rotor.  I then tried (I never tried this method before) to whack it on the laminations with a 3lb dead blow hammer with no success.

Any ideas how to get this stubborn rotor off the tapered engine shaft?

Thanks

General Discussion / Rigid 3600 rpm 8kw generator
September 18, 2015, 10:23:20 AM
I purchased a used rigid generator with a 14hp electric start Subaru engine and 8kw /10kw surge head that did not make electricity.  Since the rest of the generator was clean and the engine only had 96 hours on it I figured i would take a shot.

I am good with engines but not so good with generators so any help would be greatly appreciated.   If there are any other things i need to add please let me know as i only took readings i thought were relevant, but, again i don't know a whole lot about gen heads.

When i applied 12vdc to the brushes i got 46vac out of the generator.  Suspecting a bad AVR I ordered a new one and replaced the old one.  To my dismay it was still not producing power.

I took a volt reading across the brushes with the engine running and got 15vac (brushes looked good and the slip rings were clean.

When i ohm the rotor i got 61.5 to 62 ohms of resistance (dont know if that is good or bad)

There are 4 heavy gauge wires coming from the stator 2 black and two white.

When i ohm these wires i got

L1 to R1 0.2 ohms
L2 to R2 0.2 ohms

R1 to R2 0 ohms
L1 to L2 0ohns
L2 to R1 0 ohms
L1 to R2 0ohms

There are 4 smaller wires coming from the stator  white, green and two blue wires.
I only get resistance between the white and green no other combination results in any reading.

Is there a way to check the smaller wires which i believe are the harmonic winding but i am not sure. do i need to do this with the engine running.

Thanks for the help in advance

General Discussion / Power Outage
June 27, 2015, 12:52:06 PM
We had some very high straight line winds come through here on early Tuesday evening and a tornado warning (doesn't happen here in southern new jersey often) and it took out a lot of trees and power lines.  My neighbors trampoline who is about 400 yards away went through his vinyl fence and ended up in my back yard wedged against a large tree.   When I saw that I quickly got a large piece of rope and tied it to the tree so it wouldn't go any further.

Power went out at around 6pm on Tuesday and they didn't restore power until around noon Friday.  I am pleased to say that the Listeroid performed flawlessly averaging 14to 16 hours straight per day average load was only about 1700 to 1800 watts.

My listeroid is a hybrid using diesel for pilot ignition and natural gas.   In the aproximatly 45 to 50 hours of run time it only used a little over three gallons of diesel,  I have no idea how much natural gas it used but who cares I didn't have to go find a open gas station that sold diesel since i normally keep 15 to 20 gallons on hand.

General Discussion / Hurricane Sandy on the way
October 27, 2012, 09:32:51 AM
Well it looks like the track of Hurricane Sandy will hit just south of us as of this time making landfall in Maryland / Delaware.   We are located in Southern New Jersey about 50 miles East of Atlantic City.  50 to 60mph sustained wind speed expected and about 6" or more or rain.  The electric company has already made robo calls telling customers to expect power outages and not to go near downed power lines (if you are too stupid to stay away from downed power lines I think Darwin need to do his thing).  Well we have plenty of diesel for the listeroid, lots of food in the house and plenty of water on hand to ride out a long power outage if that happens.

General Discussion / Honda Generators
September 13, 2012, 02:29:03 PM
A guy I sold a pressure washer to told me that he had two honda generators that didn't run at his house sitting outside under a tarp and asked me if i thought i could fix them.   Both were given to him because the engines didn't run.  He said if i could get them running I could keep the one i wanted and give him the other one back.   He brought them over and I proceeded to check them out.  Both had old stale fuel in them requiring a tank flush and a carburetor rebuild.  After I got the engines running one of the two generators was only running at 51hz and 128 VAC or 256 VAC when switched to 220.

I replaced the brush set and AVR ( got both the adjustable avr and brush set delivered for 27.00 dollars)on this one and it now reads 120vac @60hz like it is supposed to.  The other generator (the one i kept) did not need a new AVR but I did replace the brush set since they are so cheap and easy to replace.

Since i had the tanks off anyway i decided to paint them because they were sun faded and looked pink not red.  While the tanks were off I pressure washed the frame and engine.  I repainted the frame with the engine and generator still in the frames and reinstalled the tanks.

Here is a photo of the two generators I kept the em3500s with electric start.  These are rated  @3500 watts with the 8 hp gx240 engine but i suspect that it will do 4k if pushed.

The one on the left is an EB3500sx this is the one i gave the man back with the new AVR and brush set.  The on on the right is the Em3500sx with electric start and 12v 8amp regulated charging setup that i kept.  Now i have a backup if my Listeroid ever fails.

One of the nice features that both of these Honda's have is the auto throttle feature.  If there is no load on the generator it will slow to an idle.  When a load is sensed it throttles up the engine to 3600 rpm.  As soon as the load drops it goes back to idle.  You can turn the auto throttle on or off via a rocker switch

NEW DELHI — A power grid failure blacked out northern India for hours Monday, halting trains, forcing hospitals and airports onto backup power and providing a dark, sweltering reminder of the nation's inability to meet its energy needs as it strives to be an economic power.

While the midsummer outage was unique in its reach — it hit 370 million people, more than the population of the United States and Canada combined — its impact was softened by Indians' familiarity with almost daily blackouts of varying duration.

General Discussion / Help needed
November 13, 2011, 08:36:58 AM
Hi guys I need some help.  I am also a member over at the Lister Engine Forum and have been for many years.  A few weeks ago i changed my email address because I changed providers.  When I did it said that until my new email address was verified I could not log on to the site.  Could some one ask one of the Mods to please verify my new email address since there is no provision on the site for me to contact a mod and I can not post over there.

My login name on that site is carlb23

Thanks

I have a wattson universal transducer that was originally setup to monitor the power output of my wind turbine and stream it over the net.  I hooked up the RS485 output to a rs485 to serial converter but I can not get it to communicate with my computer.  When i use the Elkor / wattson software it says i have no comm.   Is anyone familiar with these units?

Thanks

Wind, Solar and Hydro / Solar and Wind projects
September 21, 2009, 01:09:28 PM
We currently have 10kw of Solar on our home a 1.8kw wind turbine and two solar air heaters.  We are planning to put another 10kw of solar (PV) and another 80 sq/ft hot air heater.  If any one is interested I can post some pics, if I can figure out how.
