Is anybody out there converting on grid 220 volt single phase to 220 volt 3 phase? I'm needing to run a CNC 15hp 40 amps max. Not interested in building one just lookin for a good product that will give me stable 3 phase. The digital solid state ones seem to be priced up there. I also learned you need to upsize the converter about double to get good results. I have supplied a circuit with 100amps 220v to run whatever I go with. Rotary seems to be my $$$$ route. Looking for a been there done that reply that will keep me out of some of the potholes!

I think static convertors need to be upsized about 1/2, but rotary convertors only about 1/3. I have one of these for my CNC lathe/mill and I have been very happy with it:

As long as you size them adequately, I don't think there are any potholes. Most manufactures will work with you to select right model for what you plan to use it for. One can also DIY build one, but I haven't any first-hand experience doing that.
Using a VFD is the superior method to make three phase from single phase. As previously stated use a 10HP VFD on a 5HP load. The VFD gives soft start, torque limiting, variable rpms, braking and reversing. And allows loading the three phase motor to 100% without noise or overheating.
