Title: 2-53 Detroit Genset
Post by: dkeav on July 30, 2015, 05:07:13 PM
Any thoughts good bad or otherwise on a 2-stroke 2-53 diesel stationary configuration for a genset?  I've seen they were used similarly to what I have in mind by railroad for reefer operations, and I think some Telco's relied on them for backup power as well.  I'm wanting to purchase a local stationary 2-53 that is stuck for the learning experience of rebuilding a 2-stroke detroit, but I was thinking of an application after that.  Probably trailer mounting with a 20-25kw direct drive genhead.

I don't have any direct experience so I'll mindlessly repeat what I've heard on the internet:

1) They are very robust engines.
2) Parts are expensive.
3) They like to burn lots of fuel, especially when partially loaded.

Now see there are two camps on their fuel consumption.  Some argue they are one of the best on fuel if in tune.  We've had a few before in trucks and industrial equipment and they seemed to be rather fuel friendly, especially compared to their cat neighbor.  I think most of the genset units were rated at 1200rpm, which is low for a 53 series detroit I would think.

brake specific fuel consumption of any diesel is lousy. That is why going way oversize on a genset is not wise. At 1800rpm she is good for 45+ HP so a 30KW generator head is a match.
The updated DD rebuild kits for the 2-53 use the N series pistons and sleeves. C series injectors, C50's would be good. There is a new engine oil side blower seal to reduce the chances of a run away. There are new updated springs for the cam followers and valves. Grinding valves and seats reduces compression unless the head is milled. to compensate. Or use new seats and valves. Parts are not expensive. Install a block heater for cool weather starting. Use straight weight Shell T1 Rotella sae 30 or 40  depending other wise she will be wrecked. Oil pressure is important. Replace every little bushing and bearing to tighten her up.
