Title: Starting your prime mover with the PMA
Post by: NRGdreamer on November 05, 2012, 08:16:18 AM
Greetings again,

Wanted to ping this idea off everyone. Was curious why all of the PMA based gensets have conventional 12V starter motors to crank the prime mover. Couldn't this be done with the PMA operating like a BLDC motor?

In this context... Has anyone considered using something like a Kelly Controllers BLDC regen motor controller to start an engine, then engage regenerative braking?  Seems like a great way to get engine starting and polyphase AC rectification done with the hardware. The regen control can be discrete or analog inputs.

Its a bit hard to uncover deeper documentation on how the regen operates to optimize and control charging voltage.

Thoughts/ideas?

Benjamin

Here is an example of a DC generator used to start the prime mover.
