Title: Help with Tubing Selection Needed
Post by: veggie on February 15, 2012, 11:50:50 AM
Calling all solar hot water experts...

While I have inside walls removed and the studs exposed, I want to install some hot water pipes (tubes) for the future installation of some solar hot water panels. The mechanical room is at one end (North end) of the structure and the panels will be ground mounted at the south end. Panels and mech. room are separated by 2 small bedrooms which both have their walls exposed.

I need to run two water lines and some temp sensor wire for the full length of the structure prior to them being enclosed within the new walls. This enables me to add the panels anytime in the future.

Question:
What is the best tubing to use within the walls ?
After installation, the tubing will be insulated and then enclosed in the wall insulation and drywall panels.

Copper, pex, pvc, other ???

cheers,
veggie

If you're willing to invest in the tool PEX is a great way to go. I did my entire house and hydronic system with PEX. Zero failures so far. Also you can color code blue for cold and red for hot.

Pex will save you a bundle over copper.  I used the stainless clamps, and barbed fittings from Pex Supply for my in floor heat system distribution and manifolds.  I've not had any failures some 4 years later.  A plumber friend of mine swears by the Shark Bite connectors. I've only used them in a couple places, but do like them for ease of use.

If your future panels are the concentrating types or other with temps over 210F, then copper is king, just for the output side.
