I am most interested in the blackbird as a bat charger, using a transformer rectifier. My on-board AC requirements are easily met by my inverter.

The AC side could be a good fit with the Victron System, a synchronizing inverter. For dealing with bigger inductive loads.http://www.oceannavigator.com/ME2/dirmod.asp?sid=&nm=&type=Publishing&mod=Publications%3A%3AArticle&mid=8F3A7027421841978F18BE895F87F791&tier=4&id=62BDFD814C494BA8B543B0B0762FE9C6

This is a link to Victron's site http://www.victronenergy.com/generatortest/, they have a very proven track record in the marine and the off grid industry. I can tell you that they are very responsive to customer needs.

The ability to scale the gen speed with the load is certainly something everyone here has talked about.

Most co=gen applications probably are already meeting the restive load requirement of the design. A lot of solar guys use a restive dump load, I am using a resistive dump load on my DC Co-Gen.

I have sent blackbird an email, I'll wait their response.

If nothing else it shows that a creative thinker, still has some room to grow ideas.

It' seems that it potential to be efficient;
From the bb faq http://www.raventechpower.com/faq.htm
What is the efficiency (from lowest to highest speed)?
At a 5kW load, the Blackbird™ requires approximately 8.5 horsepower at 3,000 rpm which corresponds to a system efficiency in the 80-85% range. This same efficiency is attained at 12 horsepower for 7kW output. Additional windage load develops at higher rpm.
