Lister Type Auto Shutdowns

Hey All,

Been thinking about auto shutdown systems. I was wondering what everyone has been doing. I have seen a few with murphy switches and such, and I have one here that hasnt been installed. I have seen a few systems on here, but cant seem to find much at this time. Can someone provide a link with photos of the mounting of these systems and such? Hell I have 8" of bronze fittings to just make a mount for the sensor for the radiator fan, where is the murphy sensor going and such, without having 15 pounds of bronze hanging off the end of the water jacket manifolds?

If you search the forum, you will see several sophisticated methods for auto shut down. For me, most were beyond my capabilities and time. I built a simple rack puller using a Murphy temperature switch gage, Murphy solenoid, and Murphy relay. Using their relay is very important, because after about 2 seconds the relay disengages the pull circuit (high 12 VDC amperage) and leaves the holding circuit engaged (IIRC-2 amps). This is important in case of  something preventing the solenoid from traveling the full stroke (I.e. Not enough cable on rack puller – too short).

Incidentally, I used the more expensive unit that has 14 lbs of pulling force. You dont need to spend that much, Listerboy used the cheaper version and it works fine.http://shopping.murcal.com/Catalog/Rack-Pullers/RP2307B-Push-Pull-Solenoid

If I had it to do over again, I might have a large spring hold the rack closed as the default position. Then use the auto shut down to over ride this condition as long as the temperature was within limits. The advantage is that if the 12 VDC system failed, the rack would close and the engine shut down.
