Nice, Veggie.  Are you really running the engine at 1800 or at 2800 as you originally intended?

Thanks BruceM,
I'm going to start out at 1800 rpm to see how it sounds.
This one may be very happy at 1800....or...maybe not.
It is a simple 20 minute pulley change to step up to 2800 if needed. Although I don't need that much power.
We had some remote site air compressors where I work and they had Kubota Z485's running at 1800 rpm and they seemed fine.
They were systems that ran for extended periods and perhaps the 1800 rpm was to aid in longevity.
All in good fun, if the 1800rpm doesn't sound right I can change it.

As an example of how they sound, here is a video.
At the 27 sec point this fellow gently revs the engine into the 1800 rpm range.

Another example....
They are a fairly tame engine.

Seems plenty smooth at 1800 to me. Nice engine!

I'm looking to buy a Bx25D tractor and went out to a machinery place yesterday to look them over.
The guy opened the engine compartment and there was the cutest tiny little 3 Cyl diesel sitting there. It looked like a mini minor motor only smaller, which it was This was the 3cyl 23 Hp version and even that is compact little thing.

Pitty they are so expensive here. a decent used one goes for $2k+
They seem very compact for the power output.  Fitting a little turbo may help the output and make them even quieter and smoother.

This brings a close to this old dated post.
The project is finally completed  ;D

It looks very nice. On a good load how much will it put out?

Is that 3.5kw at the 1800 rpm? I thought that out put would be more in the 2600-2800 range?

Henry W

A Z482 should pull around 5000 watts at 2800 rpm.

mobile_bob

those little 2cyl japanese diesels are just plain cool!

i wish i would have bought a couple when surpluscenter had them for sale for $550 each.

I want to beat myself up for selling the Cat C0.5 from Surplus Center. :-[

If we only knew...

Unfortunately we have to move forward and use what we can get our hands on.

Thanks keith71

Shortly after I built it, a friend required a generator to keep his off grid battery bank charged during cloudy winter days.
He wanted something that could run on waste vegetable oil. As you know, these engines are Indirect Injection.
So I sold it to him.
He added a heated "spin-on" fuel filter just ahead of the injector pump and ran it 4 hrs per day on WVO.
Should go for a long time.

Yes, I agree Henry.
I sometimes wish I had kept it.  :(
